Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

How many wives did Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali (R), etc have?

And were all these ladies slaves or orphans or not?

I’m trying to find an inventory of who married who - can’t find it.

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

I do not know exactly bout all the marriages of the four,BUT,PCG you need to know that the verse about marrying 4 was revealed at a time when there was no limit on number of marriages.
I have read in one book that Umer RA at that time had 10 wives and he divorced 6 and kept 4.
What this verse did was to put a maximum limit of 4.

And no,not all of their wives were orphans or slaves

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

Abu Bakr had 4 wives. His first two wives bore him 2 children each. Don't know if they were orphans or slaves or whatever.

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

Did they also keep concubines? Or female slaves (whom they had sexual relations with)? Or did they marry these slaves?

I'm confused - when the Quran talks about "that which the right hand posseses", is it talking about slaves that you can have sex with, or is it talking about concubines? Because I keep hearing that the Prophet and his sahabah had concubines?

I thought a concubine can be any mistress, not necessarily of slave origin. Or is the word here being used differently?

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

No concubine cannot be any mistress,it has to be slave girl.

I am not aware if any of four Caliphs had conubines.

I have however read a Hadeeth about Hazrat Ali ra in Bukhari that talks about him having had a concubine from one of the battles.

Regarding Ummulmomineen Maria Qubtia, some say that she was a slave girl but MOST historians say that she had a Nikah with Rasoolullah saw

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

I read that too about Maria the Copt (I guess that's the English version of the name). She bore him a son. Apparently, some say that he did marry her, and some say he did not? Did the Prophet have other concubines that he did not marry?

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

As far as i have read NO

Re: Polygamy - Companions of the Prophet

Isn't a concubine the same as a female slave?

If not, what is the difference between the two?

My understanding from my own reading is that at the Ottoman court, the girls commonly described by orientalists as the sultan's concubines were in fact his female slaves.
