hi guys, i have a question . i went for an ultra sound and trans vaginal exam? and my GP said that both my ovaries have a series of cysts/follicles on their outsides. she booked me for an appointment with a specialist to see if i have PCOS, but the appointment is a month away and I’m still a little confused as to what this condition means for me. I’ve had my blood work done, sugar levels are normal, I’m under weight and i have regular periods and i ovulate every month. i don’t have acne or any of the symptoms that people with PCOS have. so i don’t know what to make of my situation. surely these cysts affect me somehow? and that too in a negative way? I’m not trying to conceive, but does anyone know if having cysts can hinder fertility? is there anyone who has had a similar diagnosis? or anyone who knows more about polycystic ovaries? thanks.
Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
The way PCOS can present is very variable and patients can be anywhere on a very wide spectrum. It is not necessary for all the signs and symptoms to be present in all patients.
From what I know PCOS does hinder fertility.Infact most of the times women come to know of PCOS when they have been unable to conceive for a while.
Wishing you the best and hoping it is nothing bad,Inshallah.

PC ovaries means that instead of one cyst you have many (poly) cysts. It does hinder with infertility but it is treatable with meds.

Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
is there any family history of pcos?
Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
I'm curious to know why you underwent an ultrasound if you didn't have any symptoms?
Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
^^I actually wondered the same thing but thought it wont be too nice to ask…
.But it will be nice to know what made the doctor do a transvaginal scan…
Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
You can have PCO without having PCOS or have PCOS without having PCO; one doesnt always mean the other. You may have polycystic ovaries, but still have a regular, normal ovulation and menstruation cycle, normal hormone levels etc and still conceive easily. Insha Allah you wont have any problems, but get everything checked out to make sure there is nothing else and if you do think you are having a hard time conceiving, dont delay in seeing your doctor. Often women who have polycystic ovaries, they can be at risk for over stimulation with fertility drugs, due to the high antral follicle counts, but they have alternative, safer treatments to protect from OHSS, like natural or mini IVF or IVM instead of traditional IVF
Re: polycystic ovaries but not PCOS
Thank you for the advice everyone. there was actually no real reason as to why my GP asked for a full check up. she asked me if i was married , i said yes, and asked me if i had ever had an ultra sound, i said no. so she said that i should go for a full check up just to see if everything was ok, in case i wanted to have children in future. and if anything came up, she would hook me up with a specialist , if not she would do a pelvic exam and that would be that.
my sister who is also a doctor, was also puzzled as to why i was being checked so thoroughly. i don't regret it though. i would rather know now that somethings wrong when I'm not trying to conceive , then wait a year while trying to get pregnant and then find out that somethings wrong.
and no , no one in my family has PCOS, or even symptoms of it. but i guess thats not unusual.
the only bad thing about me being in this position is the fact that i don't know what comes next for me. i can take bad news, but waiting is the hardest part. plus, I'm having a difficult time explaining to my husband whats wrong with me, since i don't know myself, and he's out of country and he gets worried far too easily. sigh....
anyway, thank you all for the advice and prayers : )
