Contrasting wins for Australia and Pakistan: World Cup Polo qualifying round

LAHORE, Dec 7: **Australia and Pakistan won their opening matches of the World Cup Polo Zone ‘D’ qualifying round in contrasting styles at Lahore Polo Club on Sunday. **

In the most exciting encounter, six goals by four- handicapper Brodie Donovan helped Australia catch up with India thrice before winning in the sudden-death period 9-8.

Eight goals by Hissam Ali Hyder and five by Shah Qublai Alam, both three-handicappers, enabled Pakistan to trash Iran 20- 1 1/2. The India-Australia clash turned out to be a personal tussle between Donovan and the Indian skipper Sameer Suhag, but Robert Balliard excelled in the extra sixth chukker by scoring the golden goal.

Sameer, who scored seven goals, including double hat tricks, committed a blunder when India were leading 8-7 in the final fifth chukker.

Donovan was on the attack from the right, but missed the forehander. Sameer, chasing Donovan picked the ball, but instead of retaining it he hit a forehander straight back to Donovan.

The stunned Donovan, did not let the opportunity pass by as he lofted the ball into the goal post about 80 yards away from the right side for a spectacular goal which also restored the much needed parity,

However, Donovan could have averted the sixth extra chukker had he not missed out three penalty shots in the dying minutes of the fifth chukker. On all the three occasions, Shamsheer Ali deflected the penalties with time interruption. Shamsheer was later adjudged the Man-of-the-Match.

Australia vs India match analysis

Earlier, Australia came from behind to level the score 2-2 in the first chukker. Jock Mackay gave the Australians an early lead, scoring a field goal after carrying the ball for about 100 yards. Sameer struck two back-to-back goals converting a 40 and 30 yards penalties to put India 2-1 ahead. Donovan converted the 60 yards penalty with a lofted shot to equal the score.

India dominated the second chukker as Sameer struck three goals in a row to give India a 5-2 lead. He completed his first hat trick by scoring a field goal. Sameer then converted two back- to-back 40 yards hits first with a rolling shot and the second with was lofted.

The match was at its peak in the third chukker. Australia staged a brilliant comeback after being 6-2 in arrears to again hold the high flying Indians 6-6 by adding four goals.

First Sameer made it 6-2 by scoring a field goal and completing his second hat trick. He scored with a brilliant under the neck shot with an acute angle.

Donovan scored three goals in a row to complete his first hat-trick. He converted a 40, 30 and then 60 yards penalties. His captain Adam Tolhurst, another four-handicapper, chipped in with a goal as Australia managed to make it 6-all.

India again leapt ahead 8-6 by adding two more goals in the fourth chukker. Sameer struck his seventh goal to complete his tally while Ravi Rahotre scored his lone goal crowning a field effort. But it was again Donovan who kept Australia in the match which could be called the final for either side. Donovan again levelled the score 8-8 by scoring two more goals in quick succession. He converted a 40 yards penalty first, before Sameer provided him the chance to equal the score.

In the third minute of the sudden death, both teams exchanged quick attacks but honour went to Ballard who scored the golden goal with a superb under the neck shot from a difficult angle.

Australia and India record big victories

LAHORE, Dec 9: Australia and India recorded big margin wins on the second day of the 7th FIP World Cup Polo play-off at Lahore Polo Club on Tuesday.

Australia beat Iran - Analysis

Ten goals by ace Brodie Donovan, a four-goal handicapper, helped Australia thrash minnows Iran 19- 3 1/2 to register their second consecutive win. A double hat trick by Shamsheer Ali, a five goal player, enabled India to trounce Singapore 13-5 1/2 to record their first success.

**Donovan, the hero of Australia’s spectacular win against India (9-8) in the opener on Sunday, again displayed superb horsemanship and marksmanship to become the top scorer and earn the Man-of-the-Match award. **

Iran with little international exposure, missed several chances due to their inaccurate hitting, some even from very close range. They also created big gaps, allowing Australia to score goal after goal. Australia scored nine goals through penalty hits underlined the number of fouls Iran committed.

But the Iranians showed some marked improvement as compared to their performance against Pakistan on Sunday. Australian coach, Jamie Mackay dismissed a suggestion that Iranians’ performance against Pakistan and against his own team proved that the hosts were a strong side.

**" We used our horses to half their potential in order to save their energy for Saturday’s challenging match against Pakistan". ** :hoonh: Mackay said that it was a good sign that his players had quickly taken control of their steeds and with time they would improve further.

Iran’s Pakistani coach, Tariq Tareen said that it was the first time in 25 years that the Iranians were playing abroad, so they were learning and he believed that they had good future prospects. He said that he was quite satisfied with the performance of his team despite the fact that it had conceded 39 goals in the first two matches.

Donovan a penalty hit specialist, scored eight goals through penalties and two field goals. He completed his hat trick by scoring all the three goals of the first chukker to give Australia a flying start 3- 1 1/2 lead. Iranians were playing with one and a half goal handicap.

Donovan, scored his first goal with an under-the-neck shot. He struck the second after converting a 30 yard penalty hit with a lofted shot and completed hat trick cashing in on a spot penalty only four yards away.

On the rampage, the Australians added three more goals in the second chukker to increase their lead to 6- 1 1/2. Jock Mackay, who scored three goals, earned his first when he struck the ball with a cut shot. Robert Ballard, who contributed four goals, banged home his first in a similar fashion minutes later. In the dying minutes, Donovan struck his fourth goal converting a 60 yards penalty hit with a rolling shot.

Maintaining their attacking game, Australia earned three more goals in the third chukker to make it 9- 1 1/2. Mackay struck his second with an angular under- the-neck shot. Donovan capitalized on 30 yard penalty hit with a lofted shot to score his fifth goal. Ballard came to score his second when he converted a 40-yard penalty hit with a lofted shot.

The Iranians made a feeble attempt in the fourth chukker, when they scored their two goals but also conceded five goals to trail at 14- 3 1/2. Ballard scored his remaining two goals with back to back burst on field attempt, while Donovan also scored his 6th and 7th goals in this chukker converting a 30 and 40 yard penalty hits. Australian captain Adam Tolhurst who scored two goals scored his first to make the tally of the chukker.

For Iran, their captain Siamack Ilkhanizadeh scored the first goal. He scored a field goal after a short melee in front of the goalpost. Reza Behboodi scored the second by converting a 40 yards penalty with a lofted shot.

In the fifth chukker, Australia struck five more goals to make the tally. Donovan completed his tally by scoring three goals while Tolhurst and Mackay added a goal each. Forty seconds before the final whistle the horse of Sohrab Sanandaji of Iran stumbled. The rider fell on the ground and soon after his horse fell on him. He was later removed to hospital.

Tariq, later told reporters that Sohrab received injury on his head as he was struck by his helmet on which the horse fell. However, he added Sohrab who was playing his first international match in place of Bahram Jahnbani, was conscious and it seemed there was no serious injury, he added.

Donovan was declared the Man-of-the-Match.

India beat Singapore - Analysis

India, playing without their captain Sameer Suhag, who was not fit for the game, played like a champion against Singapore. They also suffered a blow when Simran Shergill fell from his horse in the dying minutes of the fourth chukker and could not come back. Bhawani Singh replaced him.

Later, Sameer appeared before the press and said that Shergill’s medical report was awaited to ascertain his fitness for the next matches. Sameer said that the tournament was still open for three strong teams–Pakistan, Australia and India and added that Indians were not demoralised after being defeated 9-8 by Australia in the opener.

**Shamsheer, who was declared Man-of-the-Match for the second consecutive time, gave India a flying start (6- 2 1/2) by completing his double hat trick in the first two chukkers. He scored two in the first and four in the second. **

Singapore, who were playing with one and a half goal handicap, scored their first goal in the second chukker through Sattar Khan Niazi, a Pakistani settled in Singapore. Ravi Rathore, who scored three goals, struck his first and the lone goal of the third chukker through a field attempt to increase India lead 7-2 1/2.

India added three more goals in the fourth chukker while Singapore two. India led 10- 3 1/2. Vishal Singh, who added three goals, scored his first goal for India while Ravi his second and Simran his solitary goal. For Singapore, Sattar and Satinder Garcha scored a goal each.

India maintained their offensive and scored three more goals in the fifth chukker conceded one only.. Vishal scored his remaining two goals while Ravi his third goal. For Singapore Satinder blasted his second goal.

Pakistan, India score big wins in Zone D playoffs

LAHORE, Dec 11: The battle for a berth in the Paris finals resumed when two more matches were decided in the World Cup qualifying round Zone D on Thursday.

INDIA WIN - India vs Iran match analysis

In the first match, favourites India, thrashed an already demoralized Iran 27- 1 1/2, who had earlier been trounced by Pakistan in their first outing.

Iran had shown a marked improvement in their second match against Australia, against whom they had scored two goals to add to their handicap of 1 1/2. A better performance was being expected from Iran, but confronted by an Indian juggernaught out for blood, after suffering a narrow loss to Australia in their opening game, the Indians went on a goal-scoring rampage under the pressure of which the Iranians completely wilted.

India’s star players Sameer Suhag (5) and Shamseer Ali (5) were in full cry and found the posts as many as 11 and 10 times respectively the formidable Indian combinations soared to new heights as it compiled a record 27 goals against Iran’s 1 1/2 goal handicap.

  • RESULT: India 27 Iran 1 1/2

PAKISTAN WIN - Pakistan vs Singapore match analysis

The second match featured Singapore and Pakistan. In Singapore’s initial game against Australia, the Singaporeans had shown some flashes of brilliance to go down 13-5 and it was said that once they had put their act together they had the ability to come into reckoning against any of the combinations present.

And so it was at the beginning of the first chukker when Singapore’s Satinder Singh (1) took everyone by surprise to notch up the first goal of the match within minutes of the start of the game.

This rattled Pakistan and put them on the defensive but only for a short while, as Raja Samilluah scored the equalizer with a brilliant solo run before the chukker ended.

After the initial shock the game went Pakistan’s way despite noteworthy attacksfromSingapore’s Sattar Niazi (4) and Sariman Sarir’s (5), which were blunted by Pakistan No. 4, Shah Qubilai Alam.

**However, the difference between the two teams was Hissam Ali Hyder (3). With the ball constantly passed on by Raja Samiullah (4) and Qubilai and always keeping to his position, Hissam had a series of brilliant runs that culminated in his scoring six goals to win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award - once again. **

***Pakistan emerged victorious with a 12-6 1/2 score, but there were glimpses of weakness in the middle with pressure causing mistakes, as well as reckless rushing in the goal mouth and unnecessarily long shots at goal which went wide of the mark. ***

Pakistan will have to rethink its strategy when they go up against Australia on Saturday as the visiting side from Down Under has a strong defensive line-up and an uncanny ability to launch counter-attacks from a rear-guard position as was only too visible in their match against India.

**However, Pakistan has engaged the services of a remarkable coach in the form of Podger El Effendi, who at his prime on 8 goals was the highest handicap player Pakistan has ever produced and he will surely take all into the reckoning before the crucial match against Australia is played. **

  • RESULT: Pakistan 12 Singapore 6 1/2
