Being Kashmiri myself, I fully support the idea of Independent Kashmir. This could be a win win for all 3 parties involved in the conflict.

Poll: Most Indians, Pakistanis Would Tolerate Kashmiri Independence

  • Results show that majority of Indians and Pakistanis find Kashmir’s independence ‘tolerable’

By Iftikhar Gilani

NEW DELHI: An opinion poll conducted by reputed international agencies has revealed that a majority of people in India want a resolution to the Kashmir issue as per the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

The poll found that people in both India and Pakistan have expressed a readiness to have the Kashmiri people decide their own fate, adding that if the Kashmiris chose independence, a majority of Indians and Pakistanis would find it tolerable. In India, the opinion poll was conducted by reputed agency C-Voter, while in Pakistan, AC Nielson gathered views on behalf of the WorldPublicOpinion.org polling site.

The poll revealed that more than half of the population of India and Pakistan were open to a range of possible outcomes for Kashmir. It found no strong majority opposition on either side to Kashmir becoming an independent country or to dividing the state between Pakistan and India.

“Given the deep roots of the conflict over Kashmir, it is surprising that the conflict has not polarised majority of the Pakistani and Indian people, as they do not fall in line with their governments’ positions,” said Clay Ramsay, the research director of WorldPublicOpinion.org, a project run by the University of Maryland, United States.

In the survey, Indians and Pakistanis were asked to consider a range of possible outcomes for Jammu and Kashmir and to say whether they found them desirable, acceptable, tolerable, or unacceptable.

The idea that received the lowest level of opposition was for Jammu and Kashmir to become independent.

Re: Poll: Most Indians, Pakistanis Would Tolerate Kashmiri Independence

I support an independent Kashmir, that maintains its sovereignty as an independent nation, with open trade with all nations including India/Pakistan. But, No Pakistan meddling in its affairs, No India meddling in its internal affairs.

I support Kashmiri people

I dont know how the Pakistani media get this idea from the polls that Indian’s are in favour of an Independent Kashmir. I have attached the link to the post .
Indian and Pakistani Publics Show Flexibility on Kashmir - World Public Opinion=

While 10% of Pakistani’s are not in favour of independent Kashmir, the percentage is much higher ( 50%) in India. So you cannot club the two together. There is very little acceptability to Kashmir being independent in India. While 53% of people in Pakistan want Kashmir to be independent, the figure is very low in India - 6%. I wouldn’t put much emphasis on "tolerable"numbers.

I can understand the wishfull thinking for Pakistani media, if we cannot get it then at least let India also not get it.

In the changed geo-political situation in the world, Paksitan has bigger problems to handle on their own. Kashmir has & will take a back seat as of now. With Betitulah Mehsud knocking on the doorsteps of Islamabad, the leadership in Paksitan will not like to start another front with India. In India also with the elections coming, no one is going to make any moves on Kashmir.

If Pakistan is really serious, then they should begin the process of having the entire Kashmir under their control (Azad Kashmir as well as northern areas) turned into an independent entity - to begin with. After all Independence to Kashmir is having a higher percentage in Pakistan. Once that is done, then it would lead to a changed scenario in India.

SO do I.
What ever they want.
We should not once AGAIN impose our idea of independence on them.
May be they want to be part of Pak.

On a separate note, India has refused pak offer to pull back pak army(3 troops) indiand army(800,000 troops) from both sides of kashmir.

Re: Poll: Most Indians, Pakistanis Would Tolerate Kashmiri Independence

It is obvious that whoever wrote this article does not have or use their brain cells.

Indians overwhelmingly said No:

Unacceptable 50%

Tolerable 15%
Acceptable 8%
Desirable 6%

May be India should send some books on statistical analysis and interpretation to the WPO! Better still outsource the dumbos and move to Bangalore
