Is asking someone what their political allegiance is, as personal a question as asking someone their age or weight? Is is always okay or are there times when you should never ask?

its fine to ask in the right and natural circumstances. not saying you will be but if your asking the question as means to later ambush or typecast a person then a big no no. the other circumstance not to ask is when a person may feel their political viewpoint is under attack by society

No problem. Ask them I do it all the time. I also pretty fast at dodging the punches and verbal abuse afterward.
