ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday echoed with the demand of holding Pervez Musharraf accountable for abrogating the Constitution and weakening the democratic institutions.

The legislators were of the view that if those who abrogated the Constitution were not punished, then parliament’s supremacy would never be established. Initiating the debate, chief whip of the PML-N Sheikh Aftab regretted that so far no dictator had been punished for subverting the Constitution. “Those who sacked the elected governments, arrested the elected prime ministers and derailed the democratic system go unpunished. They should be held accountable if we want to establish the supremacy of parliament,” he said. He said the time had come to demonstrate that those who had abrogated the Constitution would not go unpunished.

Zafar Baig Bhitni from Fata, without naming Musharraf, said if the accountability of a man, who abrogated the Constitution, purchased a house in London and constructed a house worth Rs 180 million at Chak Shahzad in Islamabad, was objected to, then he would oppose the accountability of others.

He suggested setting up of a parliamentary committee, comprising members from all the parties, to investigate all the agreements ranging from rental power to defence deals. “If we did not catch the big fish, then we will have no reason to catch the small ones,” he added.

Chief whip of the PML-Q Riaz Hussain Peerzada said the PML-Q would not defend Musharraf but the situation would not change without transferring the real power to parliament. He said a commission be set up to look into all the allegations leveled against politicians.
