**ISLAMABAD: Police on Tuesday registered a case against ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf for ordering the house arrest of top judges during a bid to hold onto power two years ago, an official said.**

Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and sacked about 60 judges on November 3, 2007 when the Supreme Court of Pakistan appeared poised to declare him ineligible to contest a presidential election while in military uniform.
On a plea filed by lawyer Aslam Ghuman, Islamabad’s district and sessions judge Mohammad Akmal on Monday directed police to register a case against Musharraf, who is currently in London.
‘We have registered a case against Pervez Musharraf under Pakistan’s Penal Code,’ Hakim Khan, the chief officer of the relevant police station, told AFP.
The registration of the case will now see police investigate the charges levelled against the former head of state, who seized power in a 1999 coup.

Re: Police register case against Pervez Musharraf

Good news
It could be done before , I am surprised

If same treatment would have given to his predecessors, Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan and Zia-ul-Haq (he met his fate before leaving), Mush might have enjoyed decent retired life. Now his looted money, properties in world and in Pakistan and killings of thousand innocent people, handing his own people to uncle sam for few bucks will haunt him for ever. He must be cursing why he wrote “sub se pehlay Pakistan” aor wohi Pakistan sub se pehlay us ko jail main dekhna chahita hay.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | Musharraf faces arrest on return to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Former president Pervez Musharraf would face arrest if he returned to Pakistan after police registered a case against him on Tuesday over his detention of judges during a political crisis in 2007.

The military dictator, who came to power in a coup in 1999, left Pakistan more than two months ago, having been forced to quit as president in August last year in order to avoid impeachment by a hostile parliament.

‘He could either be arrested on his return or through Interpol,’ Hakam Khan, head of a police station in Islamabad where the case was lodged, told Reuters.

If convicted he Musharraf could be jailed for three years, Khan said.

This is the first time that such a case has been brought against a former military ruler.

‘He detained judges and ousted them illegally so he has to be tried for his illegal and unconstitutional actions,’ Mohammad Aslam Ghuman, the lawyers who filed the case against Musharraf, told Reuters.

Earlier this month the Supreme Court ruled that Musharraf had violated the constitution by imposing emergency rule and purging the judiciary in November 2007 in a desperate move to hold onto the presidency.

The court left it up to parliament whether Musharraf, once a vaunted ally of the United States, should be tried for treason for his actions.

With the knives out for him at home the old general has spent most of his time since late May in London and he is believed to be looking to settle in Europe.

Outrage over the use of emergency powers and detention of opposition figures, including the judges, contributed to the defeat of Musharraf’s allies in an election in 2008.

The fragile civilian government is faced by acute economic and security crises, with the army fighting a Taliban insurgency in the northwest.

Although Musharraf is regarded as yesterday’s man, the ruling coalition led by President Asif Ali Zardari’s party has shown little appetite for prosecuting him.

Nawaz Sharif, the prime minister Musharraf overthrew and Zardari’s greatest rival, is pushing for his usurper to be brought to justice.

But, analysts say the still powerful army would be uneasy if Musharraf’s humiliation became too great, as many serving generals had backed him. — Reuters

There are many who could be arrested now. Many of them still serving on key posts. N$ could register a case at Lahore a year before but he only using his Lahori tactics all the time, trying to create conflicts between different powers.

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Tuesday echoed with the demand of holding Pervez Musharraf accountable for abrogating the Constitution and weakening the democratic institutions.

The legislators were of the view that if those who abrogated the Constitution were not punished, then parliament’s supremacy would never be established. Initiating the debate, chief whip of the PML-N Sheikh Aftab regretted that so far no dictator had been punished for subverting the Constitution. “Those who sacked the elected governments, arrested the elected prime ministers and derailed the democratic system go unpunished. They should be held accountable if we want to establish the supremacy of parliament,” he said. He said the time had come to demonstrate that those who had abrogated the Constitution would not go unpunished.

Zafar Baig Bhitni from Fata, without naming Musharraf, said if the accountability of a man, who abrogated the Constitution, purchased a house in London and constructed a house worth Rs 180 million at Chak Shahzad in Islamabad, was objected to, then he would oppose the accountability of others.

He suggested setting up of a parliamentary committee, comprising members from all the parties, to investigate all the agreements ranging from rental power to defence deals. “If we did not catch the big fish, then we will have no reason to catch the small ones,” he added.

Chief whip of the PML-Q Riaz Hussain Peerzada said the PML-Q would not defend Musharraf but the situation would not change without transferring the real power to parliament. He said a commission be set up to look into all the allegations leveled against politicians.
