An Afghan senator was killed when he drove through a police ambush set for Taliban militants in north Afghanistan, officials said. Mohammad Younus, also known as Shirin Agha, was returning home early morning when the incident occurred in Puli Khumri, capital of Baghlan province.
Mr Younus failed to stop at the police checkpost and the police opened fire. His driver was killed along with him.
An investigation has been ordered into the incident, officials said.
Mr Younus was a member of Afghanistan’s upper house of parliament from Baghlan.
Baghlan has seen a marked rise in violence this year.
Ten days ago, gunmen attacked a police post on the main highway from the capital, Kabul, to Baghlan, killing eight policemen.
