PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

A PR system of election would have distributed seats more evenly based on the actual votes each party got in the election

According to statistics, former ruling alliance comprising Pakistan Muslim League, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) and Pakistan Peoples Party-Sherpao (PPP-S) secured 40% votes of the total while expected ruling parties PPPP and PML-N got 37% and 23% votes respectively

These statistics show that out of total vote cast former ruling coalition bagged 10,844,233 votes followed by PPPP with 10,055,491 votes and PML-N with 6,240,343 votes.

PR system?

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

Looking at it another way 60% of the votes were cast against the ruling coalition and none of the individual parties in the coalition got more votes than PPP, who got the biggest share of the votes.

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

There are no prizes for second place.

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

Lex Luthor means Proportional Representation.

Lex, PR system also does not exist in the US (albeit a presidential system).

say for instance California state has 50 seats in the presidential election and Obama/Clinton, McCain and others win 47%, 46% and 7% of the popular vote respectively within the state, Obama/Clinton take all 50 seats and McCain is left holding a katora in his hand despite almost as many people in CA supporting him as Obama/Clinton!

A PR system has it's own drawbacks. say we assign seats within each province to each party on the basis of PR,

Party A does well in all the big cities of Punjab such as Lahore, Faisalabad Multan and Rawal Pindi and reasonably well but not great in rural Punjab

Party B gets next to nil votes in big cities but does very well in rural Punjab

Since 65-70% of our electorate still lives in rural areas Party B would still end up with more seats in the Punjab Assembly despite being almost blanked out in the cities!

So each system has it's own pitfalls IMO

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

GoldenAsif bhaijan. Under PR system, Imran Khan would have got more seats than he would have under the current system. In the last elections he polled 1% of the votes. :)

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

Te thread title is misleading.

The former ruling coalition that is PML Q + MQM + PML (F) + Sherpao group got 40%.

The former opposition PPP (37%) + PML-N (23%) got 60% votes.

Still shows opposition parties faired much better than ruling coalition.

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

Atleast we agree on something :)

Khisyani billi khamba noche:D

Re: PML Q coalition won 40%, PPP 37%, PML N 23%

This is such an apples and oranges comparison. Its actually pretty funny, how they are trying to show they actually got some votes. And to add all of MQM’s ballot box stuffing votes in their pile is pretty innovative. :hehe:
