FAISALABAD, March 8: Punjab Assembly deputy opposition leader Rana Sanaullah Khan was picked up from here on Saturday evening allegedly by an intelligence agency.

A PML-N leader and lawyer by profession, Sanaullah was reportedly returning from his office when over a dozen men riding three jeeps intercepted his car.

His secretary, Janbaz, who was also picked up, was dropped after a few minutes. He told newsmen that the men were from ISI.

“The lawyer has been vocal against the army in the Punjab Assembly’s last session. That is why he has been picked up,” Janbaz claimed.

He said Sanaullah was kidnapped in a similar fashion after the ouster of Pakistan Muslim League government in 1999 and subjected to severe torture.

Come on it could easily be a ploy as well. You can never tell in Pakistani politics.

Anybody who says anything about army and their brutal tactics would be subjugated to torture .. even the elected members have no right to say what they seem right.. just imagine what rights ordinary people in Pakistan have... reminds one of fascist Zia's days when masses were hanged or flogged in public for saying anything against him and his tyrannical rule.. how army meddled in the affairs of civilian life in Pakistan is shameful.. just few days back we saw how these agencies pressured and coerced newly elected members to change loyalities with severe consequesces if they didnt obliged to form the present govt!

It really needs courage to say the truth in these difficult times.. we can pray that time will come when these army generals would honor their oaths and do their job - to defend our frontiers rather than subjugating their fellow country men..

they certainly are as they are Paksitani..so as army and u and me.. but the same guy was tortured in 1999 too.. but so many were tortured in past by army.. these agencies have become gods on earth.. to raise voice against their tactics is sure havoc for the person and the persons family..

Writer Ayaz Amir wrote about the MP's abduction in 1999. He was I believe arrested and then taken away blindfolded and whipped. Newspapers were told not to report it, he was also warned recently after one of his Anti Army in politics speeches, by the Punjab Assembly Speaker. That he would be taught a lesson again if he didnt control himself.

Hey guys I am not interested in scum who sites in the assembly BUT billions stashed in swiss accounts... How do we get those back? Just give me the interest and the rest can go the treasury.. :D

I hope they finish the job that they weren't able to do in 1999...and whip him silly........ but alas that is just a hope.....he's probably sitting somewhere figuring out how to loot Pakistan.

Bhadsha, the man was “picked up” because he critcised the government not because he of his corruption. If you recommend whipping corrupt politicians, it’s pretty easy to find them, their called Ministers nowadays.

With the above paragraph as a preface, let me come straight to the disturbing case of one of my former colleagues in the Punjab assembly, Rana Sanaullah from Faisalabad. On November 25 at a meeting of suspended Muslim League parliamentarians at the residence of Ch. Pervez Ellahi in Lahore, several persons spoke, including Rana Sanaullah. Some of the remarks he made were intemperate and uncalled for. I have checked this from other sources who confirm that he said things against the army he should not have.

Two days later a case was registered against Rana Sanaullah at the Ghalib Market Thana in Lahore. On November 28 he was picked up from his house in Faisalabad and brought to the Qila Gujar Singh police station in Lahore. The morning of November 29 he remained in the lock-up. At night, I am told, around 9.30 pm he was taken out of his cell and under armed escort taken to the vicinity of the Lahore airport. There he was blindfolded and put on a jeep. After travelling some distance he was taken out, his hands were tied and so tightly yanked up that his feet could barely touch the ground. Then followed a severe whipping by two people who knew their trade, in all 20-20 lashes being given in this manner. With blood streaming down his body Rana Sanaullah was brought back to his cell at the Qila Gujjar Singh thana. Now he is lodged in Kot Lakhpat Jail.

If the information I have received is wrong I deserve to be punished. If it is correct it portrays a barbarity which brings shame on all of us. Granted that Rana Sanaullah said things he should not have. Still, he was only delivering a speech and not planning to throw a bomb or committing any other act of terrorism. But suppose, for argument’s sake, it was violence he had in mind. Does even that justify the treatment he received?
