… and I dare suggest it would also spell the end of Mush’s dictatorial reign

Islamabad: A top government lawyer in the Supreme Court, Justice Malik Qayyum, has said if the verdict in the presidential reference goes in favour of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), the prime minister would have to resign.

Qayyum was addressing a media briefing in Islamabad yesterday organised by the Press Information Department. He said the presidential reference has been entrusted to the Supreme Judicial Council, therefore the Supreme Court’s interference should cease. Qayyum stressed that judges should be allowed to work without interference and the CJP should be allowed to replace judges if necessary.“Judges are working under extreme pressure, on one hand they have taken an oath, on the other, they are under pressure from the media, civil society and other quarters, not just the government,” he added. Qayyum said the filing of counter-affidavits by intelligence agency chiefs was creating a confrontational environment between state institutions. He said intelligence chiefs had vouched that the CJP had himself submitted a request to meet the president on March 6, and had insisted his agenda should be supported.
