PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

During the past few days it seems as if PMLN has come to the conclusion that they have got no other option but to confront terror. Regardless of how terrorism got hold in the country, now there is no other option but to defeat it. Any appeasement to those groups at this point of time could literally hand over the country to them.

PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace - DAWN.COM

**ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday vowed to defeat terrorist forces and turn Pakistan into a cradle of peace with the support and unity of the people and cooperation from the army and other vital security institutions.
**
**“The whole nation is united. We are in high spirits and would give an absolute defeat to the terrorists with the full cooperation of army and other national security institutions,” the prime minister said while addressing the flag hoisting ceremony here at the Convention Center to mark the country’s 67th Independence Day.
**
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also attended the ceremony on the special invitation of the prime minister.

Chairman Senate, Speaker National Assembly, Federal Ministers, members of the Parliament, diplomats and senior civil and military officers were among those who attended the special ceremony.

**The prime minister said the government was fully cognizant of the people’s concerns on the menace of terrorism and extremism, adding that the people also know that such challenges come in the history of nations and they fight these with unity and courage.
**
Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan was a nuclear-weapon state and an important regional power, and any decision about the region cannot be taken without the country’s involvement.

Later, during a joint news conference with Ban Ki-moon, Prime Minister Sharif pledged to respond to rising tensions in disputed Kashmir with “restraint and responsibility”.

The prime minister said it was vital to defuse the recent escalation of tension in the Himalayan territory.

Skirmishes have flared across the heavily-militarised Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border in Kashmir, since five Indian soldiers were killed last week in an ambush which India blamed on Pakistani soldiers.

After talks with the visiting UN chief, Prime Minister Sharif said the rising antagonism was a matter of great concern.

“Pakistan will continue to respond to the situation with restraint and responsibility in the hope that steps will be taken by India to reduce tensions,” the premier said at the news conference.

“We have to defuse tension and de-escalate the situation. Our objective is peace. For that, what we need is more diplomacy.”

India and Pakistan both administer part of Muslim-majority Kashmir but claim the mountainous territory in full.

The two sides agreed to a ceasefire along the LoC in November 2003, but there have been sporadic clashes in Kashmir with each side accusing the other of violations.

A deadly flare-up along the LoC in January brought a halt to peace talks that had only just resumed following a hiatus sparked by the 2008 attacks in Mumbai that killed 166 people. India blamed Pakistan-based militants for that attack.](http://dawn.com/news/1035845/pm-vows-to-defeat-terror-turn-pakistan-into-cradle-of-peace)

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

On the one hand the terrorists are offering to negotiate with the government and on the other hand they are carrying out their killing spree which gives us a glimpse of what they want to achieve in the garb of peace talks.

Kayani’s statement today is important in this regard:

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

The government should start implementing their counter terrorism policy asap, no time to loose.

The concept the government is giving for counter terrorism seems to make sense. They would set up a joint intelligence secretariat (including people from MI, ISI and IB) and a counter terrorism force to thwart terror attempts. The counter terror force would initially be setup in Islamabad, its important to extend its jurisdiction to the provinces.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

I know not many people are fan of him (including myself) but I think he was a very decent speech. He covered all main points in his own style.

Can you believe it, finally we're hearing speeches where 95% of the material isn't designed to glorify political shaheed father and daughter and shamelessly promote their offspring as future leaders.

No more silly jiye Bhutto slogans to end and start every damn national address. I cannot tell you how pleased I am about this particular 'change'.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

Considering the fact that many of our terrorist outfits are supported and funded by India, and also keeping in mind the fact that India has been shelling across the LOC almost non stop for the past few days, the silence of NS towards his cross border sugar importers is not surprising.

Whatever action they are vowing to take better be meaningful. Going after them without dismantling their nurseries in Punjab would be meaningless. Similarly, going after Baluch separatists without pointing out India as the culprit behind the scenes would be meaningless. We spend our lives apologizing for every rubbish accusation India throws at us, yet dont have the guts to call India out on its infractions.

Kayani’s statements dont seem to carry much weight, as he is fairly detached, and reliant on civilian authority to authorize any action, which is why there has been no meaningful response from the army at the LOC. Besides, Kayani is on his way out, so Im not sure he would take any major decisions.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

I'm pretty certain that PMLN has realised the growing Taliban base in Punjab and all the possible repercussions. For their own sake, they can only ignore this problem for so long, of course they wouldn't want to re-create the whole ANP against Taliban in KPK situation in Punjab so I'd like to believe that they genuinely do want to act but just doesn't know how bold the act should be. While Kiyani & Co rest their case on civilian government's shoulders, I feel PMLN is looking for the clear cut directions from the military and intelligence agencies.

The current COAS is icy cold beyond belief. In many ways it's a good thing and to a certain extent, it ultimately worked in Pakistan's favour but he really isn't helping the cause anymore. Naturally his time is also up so I hope NS cuts the chase and names the next COAS as soon as possible.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

criticism has started to pour in from opposition for the sake of criticism.
if the policy is reasonable, has substance, shows hope, can be implemented realistically, all parties should give support to govt in this case, and stand behind them, prioritize the decision making process and avoid leg pulling and political point scoring.

if opposition supports them, and they deliver, it will be good for everyone including the opposition. let there be no excuse for them by not giving them a hand when they need it, and lets not let them fail to prove that they were incompetent, if they fail, we'll all fail, irrespective of what political party we like

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

The current opposition had their time and they didnt do anything about it. If now PMLN is tying to do something all should lend a hand including PTI. The vibes so far seem to be positive, I hope PMLN is able to capitalize on it as it would be good for the country. Those who oppose any step taken by the government to bring peace would only expose themselves.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

That's true, but at the same time i'll not put all my eggs on PMLN basket, we do need opposition, a creative and productive one at that, not like a stuck real

if PMLN fails to do anything positive inspite of opposition's positive behavior, it will be end of their power and any goodwill

Lulz at vows to defeat terror by staying in Murree hills or Saudia Arabia

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

Strong and proactive opposition yes, both B teams and negative oppositions (criticism for the sake of criticism) will harm the country.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

Everyone has been talking about curbing terrorism but no action has been taken yet. Lets see how much “water” NS has to actually do it.

Rapid response may take care of terrorism, but what about terrorists? When are we going to have special laws to prosecute the terrorists and put them behind bars or the ropes?

They did not have a “political” life of their own, they are living the extended life of their leader.

Re: PM vows to defeat terror, turn Pakistan into cradle of peace

i hope they are serious this time around with their statements...we have heard a lot of tough talk before...we now need action than mere words.

As much as I want to believe him I can't forget his brother requesting terrorists to leave Punjab alone.
Unless few sharifs are killed in blasts nothing is happening.
Sorry to b a downer.
