LONDON: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday that former Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud had assassinated Benazir Bhutto.

Addressing the Pakistan community here, the prime minister said that Baitullah Mehsud had finally met his fate.

Gilani also hinted at a reforms package for the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (Fata) on the pattern of Gilgit-Baltistan after the completion of the military operation there.

“We have captured the strongholds of the terrorists and extremists in Waziristan due to which they are on the run,” he said. He said the military operation was successful and it would be completed soon.

The prime minister said the entire nation stood behind the government in its move to eradicate militancy. He said the policy of political reconciliation would continue so that democratic institutions are strengthened.

He said peace and stability in the region could not materialise unless the lingering dispute of Kashmir is resolved peacefully through negotiations. He said Pakistan desires peaceful relations with India and stressed the need for resumption of the stalled composite dialogue process. “For the elimination of terrorism, regional cooperation is vital,” he added.

The prime minister appreciated the expatriate Pakistani community for their generous donations to the PM’s Fund for Swat and Malakand.

He, however, urged them to evolve a collective policy rather than individual by adopting a village in Swat, Malakand and Fata and then meeting their basic needs.

He said the 1973 Constitution will be restored in its original form and democracy will be further strengthened.

The prime minister apprised the Pakistani community of the progress made by the country in different areas and said the government has successfully averted the economic crisis through prudent policies. He said foreign exchange reserves now stand at $14.7 billion.

Gilani said the world realised Pakistan’s contribution to the war against terrorism and hoped that the pledges made by Friends of Democratic Pakistan worth US$5.24 billion would be fulfilled soon.

He said political reconciliation was the hallmark of the government and for the first time the two addresses of the president to the parliament were held without any disturbance.

PM holds Mehsud responsible for Benazir’s killing

My Comments: If the Prime Minister is just reiterating what the Musharraf regime said when Benazir was first killed, so why was there any need to give the UN millions of dollars to conduct an investigation?

Re: PM holds Mehsud responsible for Benazir’s killing

^^ Ditto

in this case, meshud is dead, case closed!!!

Re: PM holds Mehsud responsible for Benazir’s killing

No Mehsood id dead but Mehsood was not one only. There may be much links. I am surprised . If drone can klill Mehsood, Why not Mulla Umer and Usama.
Benazir's killer must be many . They should must be traced.

Like Zia was killed by KGB, case closed. What a logic?

Dear Mr. Logic, tell this to your PM, he have issued the statement...

Re: PM holds Mehsud responsible for Benazir’s killing

Case closed.. wow..
Gillani must have said this on purpose or on pressure from some other groups/individual. If they govt themselves thinks that Mehsud did it, then the first thing is to take back the case from UN.
In reality this case should be given the top most priority and the real culprits are to be found. I do remember that Benazir contacted Mehsud through some sources while she landed back in Pakistan. and Mehsud made is clear that he is not behind her and he is not going to attack her. There are 'other' hands in the conspiracy, killing of Mehsud does not close the chapter.

Remember, Zardari is on record as saying he knows who Benazir’s killers are, and that he would reveal their identity at an “appropriate time.” Why the need for paying for the UN investigation and all of this hoopla? Just have him reveal himself.. I mean.. whomever is responsible. :halo:

Re: PM holds Mehsud responsible for Benazir’s killing

Meri murghi bhaag ghae hai… I think woh Mehsud ne agwa kar li hai..

Mera murgha bhi kayee dinoo say gher nahi aya… !!!

Right on target and I agree with you 100% here.:k:

GEO Pakistan** Naheed criticizes PM for terming Mehsud BB’s killer** Updated at: 1840 PST, Friday, December 04, 2009

LAHORE: Former Secretary of slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, Naheed Khan, has said that Prime Minister’s statement of declaring Baitullah Mehsud as Benazir’s killer is not correct.

Speaking at a ceremony here on Friday, she regretted that the government could not unmask the killers of Benazir Bhutto despite being two years in the office.

PPP senior leader Safdar Abbasi said that the ministers, who got benefited from the NRO, should immediately step down. He called on President Asif Ali Zardari to improve party’s falling image by initiating consultation with serious leaders and workers.

He said that democratic process should remain continued.
