PM candidate: Asif/Amin Fahim clash, Amin says strong candidate (Merged)

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Alhamdulilallah. I thought it was going to be the elected leaders of PPP and PML (N) that would oust great President Musharaf as per their one point agenda of Musharaf out, and their promise to the electorate.

Are you now saying that PPP and PML (N) cannot oust President Musharaf and Pakistan will have to wait for Democrats to be elected in the USA to and ask great President Musharaf to leave?

From the rumors I read in another thread we are being told Fahim may not be the next PM?

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

I'm sorry for misleading you Aalsi.

Let me literally spell out for you what i was saying up there......

Musharraf's gona lose the support of Republicans like Bush has. With Bush out of the picture, Musharraf is unlikely to have a ground to stand on because Democrats are not going to pat his back like Bush has all this time. :)

And Democratic forces of Pakistan will be more liked by the Democrats of the USA.

I hope that's more clear now.

Re: surprise candidate for ppp prime minister

LOL. No offense taken. :D

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Ah. I see. So basically Pakistanis will have to wait for the Democrats in the USA to come into power and see great President Musharaf ousted, rather the by the democratically elected leaders of Pakistan they had voted for to do this job. Cool.

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

^You chose not to read the other part of my original post. We hope for sooner than later, while he crosses his fingers hoping for later than sooner.

Oh and just for your comfort, i'll add. What's the rush? A few months more wouldn't hurt, afterall, his unconstitutional powers will be stripped.

A crazy in straight jacket's more a clown than a killer. (Reversal of unconstitutional amendments will make sure the jacket's tight and fits) :)

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Alhamdulilallah. So from ousting the great President Musharaf as their one point agenda, PPP and PML (N) are now going to try and amend the constitution. Mashallah.

God Bless the Democracy and the Freeest and Fairest elections as given to Pakistan by great President Musharaf. :jhanda:

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

And Amending the constitution means revoking the unconstitutional judges and restoration of Judiciary. :D

Not to mention, after the needed amendments are made, Mr. President will not able to dissolve the parliament when the Judges come walking to their desks and announce the looooooooooooooooooooooooooooong awaited verdict. :D

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Mashallah. Wouldn't that be great if it happens. Pakistan moving towards a true democratic set-up thanks to great President Musharaf. What a proud day that would be for Pakistan that it took a military leader to give it Freeest and Fairest elections and continue to give democracy a chance under his great leadership. Until the next General takes over of-course. :D

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Oh you mean the like the day that passed a few days ago when the people said enough is enough. The day when people flipped the bird to Q-League and Musharraf ?

Yes indeed, it was a blessed day. All the atrocities committed against the public of Pakistan gave rise to the voice that shattered Q-League as well as Musharraf’s ambitions to continue ruling illegally and arresting his opponents.

MashaAllah, Alhamdulillah :jhanda:

May the people’s rights be recognized and the strength of people never allow another Musharraf to overcome them.

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

One of the above sentences has to be wrong, cuz when Mushy brought in new judiciary it was hailed a "great/just move", but now you are saying removing this judiciary will be great move. So either your first sentence is correct or second, which one would you pick?

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Amin fahim was also very loyal to shaheed BiBi hence its ok to make him lead until Bilawal leads.

Re: surprise candidate for ppp prime minister

Ahmad Mukhtar was commerce minister in last PPP government...had to spend many years in jail due to textile quota scam. ..his brother Ahmad Saeed served as PIA chairman and was very close to Musharraf during the same time...he is very bitter with the brother and feels he did not do enough to get him released...a split has taken place in the family and Ahmad Mukhtar is no longer in main stream Service group..however he is very close to Zardari.

PPP trying to neutralise the rumors by spreading counter rumors through some senior party members that Amin Faheem has already been elected as their parliamentary leader...some of the smaller TV channels already carrying the news...

There is a big realisation and reality check in PPP that their vote bank has eroded in Punjab...it has become a wadera party in Punjab...depending mostly on strong land lord candidates in South Punjab...who do not need party stamp to get elected...hence the decision to elect a leader from popular semi urban central/nothern Punjab...to neutrlise Nawaz popularity in the long term...another factor going in Ahmad Mukhtar's favour Is that he has stayed loyal to the party through thick and thin...and most of all Zardari feels very comfortable with the guy...

Re: PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate

All the fantasies aside, I think at the end of the day, it will be the boring Ameen Faheem, after all.

Re: PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate

GEO reporting that Amin Faheem has been given special security protection by the govt. Possible indication that he is the next PM.

Re: Makhdoom Amin Fahim to be the next PM

Exactly! Can some one elaborate on what a "boring PM or leader" is?

PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate (merged)

Mashallah. Good to see such security for Fahim.

http://www.dawn.com/2008/02/25/nat11.htm

ISLAMABAD, Feb 24: The federal government has provided VIP security cover to Pakistan People’s Party vice-chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim, a strong candidate for the post of prime minister.

Police said on Sunday that it was part of a security programme for important personalities, including former prime minister Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, PPP’s co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-N president Shahbaz Sharif.

A senior security official said the four were getting a VIP security cover, not the VVIP cover which was meant only for the president and the prime minister.

VIP cover includes a pilot traffic police squad, armed policemen and vehicles equipped with jamming devices. The security codes are “Aftab” and “Mahtab” for the Sharif brothers and “Zafar” for Mr Zardari. The code name for Makhdoom Amin Fahim was yet to be decided.

Re: surprise candidate for ppp prime minister

Is he they guy who said we could print as many currency note as possible?

Re: PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate? (merged)

I informed guppies about Ahmad Mukhtar being nominated for PM post four days ago…I still maintain he is the most favoured candidate if you want to place your bets…Shah Mehmood is too ambitious and very close to Farooq Leghari the most hated person in Zardari’s books…Gillani is not very close to Zardari…furthurmore Zardari thinks somebody from business back ground is more likely to deliver…the other two are from feudal back ground…

Amin Fahim may not be the PM, after all

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Frontrunner Makhdoom Amin Fahim may become the casualty of a dramatic shift in the approach of the top PPP leadership, which is constantly in session within the protected boundaries of the Bilawal House here.

The winds are now blowing towards a prime minister from the Punjab. So far, three party loyalists from the big province have been quietly given the go-ahead to lobby for the top slot in the country.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that four former PPP ministers, unhappy with the developments taking place within the party ranks, have sent a message to Asif Zardari that the decision to nominate the prime minister should be left to the central executive committee (CEC) of the party to keep the party united.

But insiders claimed that this advice may not impress the party chief as it is being expected that if the CEC is given the powers, Fahim may get the vote. Top party sources claimed that Amin Fahim had already held a meeting with Zardari along with his son Jameeluzzaman in Islamabad on Tuesday and the outcome of the meeting was not so pleasant.

Fahim is now being given an indirect message to let his son become the chief minister of Sindh and, consequently, he should not claim the slot of the prime minister. Sources said this option might not be acceptable to Fahim, and one insider even claimed that if he was not nominated for this slot, the party might experience some turbulent period ahead of the formation of the government.

Three names which are now being floated in the PPP circles are Shah Mehmud Qureshi, Yousuf Raza Gillani and Ahmed Mukhtar. Earlier, sources said, the shocking change in the mindset of the party leaders that might provoke a sharp reaction in Sindh, has come amid a secret message sent to Asif Zardari by four former ministers of Benazir Bhutto government that the central executive committee (CEC) of the party should be authorised to take a decision about the future prime minister instead of some individuals making this important nomination.

These four former ministers are Raza Rabbani, Nawab Yousuf Talpur, Naveed Qamar and Syed Khurshid Shah. Sherry Rehman – these days considered to be very close to the new party chief – was said to have been assigned the most difficult task of whispering this “indecent message” into the ears of Mr Zardari.

Sherry Rehman denied it when asked by The News about her role as a messenger. “It’s absolutely untrue. I conveyed no such message,” she claimed. But, insiders insisted that Sherry was given this message by these top party leaders who were in favour of a decision by the CEC, as they feared that some individuals might make a decision that might not be a good omen for the unity of the party in the long run.

Amin Fahim and Shah Mehmud Qureshi were not available for comments. One of these former ministers told The News that it was useless to get his version on this issue as “none of us would confirm it on record, knowingly that the new party chief would not like to read it in the newspaper.”

Meanwhile, background interviews reveal that the change in the mindset of the party leaders has occurred during the last two days, as now some party elements are arguing in favour of a prime minister from the Punjab and Shah Mehmud Qureshi and Yousuf Raza Gillani were given a go-ahead a few days back.

Now the latest addition to the shortlist is Ahmed Mukhtar, who has defeated Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain with a big margin from Gujrat. Sources said Zardari was being advised to bring someone from the Punjab for obvious reasons. One is that any prime minister would be easily replaced once he (Zardari) became a member of parliament and at some stage finally decided to become the prime minister.

“If someone from Sindh like Fahim becomes the prime minister, it might be difficult for Zardari to remove him for political considerations. So, a prime minister from the Punjab greatly suits Zardari in the long run,” the sources said.

**Talking to The News, Ahmed Mukhtar confirmed that during the last two days, there was some change in the thinking within the party ranks regarding the province from which the party should nominate a prime minister.

He said actually certain people did argue that if the party had a comfortable majority in Sindh, then some other province should be given a chance to head the government.** When asked whether he was a candidate for the slot, Ahmed Mukhtar replied that every member of the parliament always wished to become the prime minister of the country, so there was no big deal in thinking about such elevation.

But, he clarified that it did not mean that everyone could become the premier. However, there was no harm in thinking about becoming the prime minister. But, he hastened to add that it was up to the party to decide. But, he denied that he was asked by Asif Zardari or someone else to start thinking about becoming the prime minister.

Mukhtar said he had also heard the names of Shah Mehmud Qureshi and Yousuf Raza as the future prime ministers.

He said there was no doubt that only two days ago, the party ranks were hearing the name of Amin Fahim but now suddenly the whispers about a prime minister from the Punjab had started. “Please don’t misquote me. Write only what I have told you,” Mukhtar cautioned.

Re: PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate? (merged)

When will Pakistan come out 'family politics' or handing power from 'father to son/daughter' etc?

This is not a rhetorical question, but has made a mockery of democracy which the political parties aspire to, and blame others for not providing.

Re: PM candidate: Amin Faheem or surprise candidate? (merged)

I totally agree with you Aalsi…the next big step the country can make towards democracy is to make the political parties democratic…but I believe this transition will eventually take palce…

Rise of people like Aitzaz Ahsan is a big example of this transition going on in the country…

Aitzaz’s future

The Pakistan report card

Thursday, February 28, 2008
Fasi Zaka

Every couple of years the newspapers run stories about allegations that India’s RAW has released thousands of beautiful agents in the country to seduce our power brokers. Whatever the truth of the matter, it seems the resonance of the Mata Hari still prevails. She was a beautiful Dutch courtesan and dancer who spied for opposing sides during World War I, eventually being executed for her crimes. Mata Hari was a woman devoted to her own progress, she recognized no nations. Quite often I have seen the problem of Mata Hari to be akin to that of the legal profession. Lawyers are like courtesans, they are paid to celebrate another individual, no matter how invidious their character or circumstances. They parley words as the tricks of their trade, much like a Geisha does.

Of lawyers with silver tongues, I always thought Aitzaz Ahsen was one, and quite unfairly too. I have only met him once, and that too several years ago when I was shooting and scripting a documentary on east-west relations. I interviewed him at length, and found him to be charming and astute, though digressing in his answers so often that my central questions (which were fairly trite and clichéd) were never answered. In the end, I removed Aitzaz on the cutting floor of the edit room.So when Aitzaz started to spear head the lawyer’s movement, I was dubious of his motives and that too because of the trivial incident I mentioned in the previous paragraph. He has always been calm under distress, smiling, cajoling and spewing invective with charm. This confidence has been unsettling, lending itself to suspicion of the man who does not lose it. If he is so calm, does he really care?

The past year has proven a lot about the nature of the man. The juncture of democracy we find ourselves standing in today can be traced back to Aitzaz’s audacity fuelled by the initial belligerence of a chief justice who tried to uphold the law. In Musharraf’s Presidency, 2007 was the watershed year. He had begun to overstep boundaries with little remorse. When he dismissed the chief justice, there was supreme discontent, but it could have dissipated had it not been for the strategic insight of Aitzaz to take the issue to the streets under the garb of the bar council meets.

Pulling that off made the issue of the judiciary relevant for the first time in an age when the pressing needs have been the provision of basic services, like staple foods, electricity and gas. The dormant opposition found a bipartisan issue under which it could flex its muscles once again.

Many things weakened Musharraf last year, but nothing compares to the image of two men, Aitzaz and the Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry questioning the legitimacy of one man whom the nation had come to see as a permanent fixture in the political landscape. With the return of the big wigs of the political parties, the agenda that was driven by the lawyers of Pakistan was appropriated by the political spectrum, and it has rewarded them handsomely in the elections. Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari both speak of the independence of the judiciary as a priority action point. Where will Aitzaz fit into all of this?

Before the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the party wasn’t entirely overjoyed in embracing what Aitzaz was doing for Pakistan. The PPP had grown a monster whose public profile and commitment to democracy began to outrank its own while it wasn’t looking from the plush concrete desert of Dubai.

I wonder how often Aitzaz’s name comes up now in the deliberations of Nawaz and Zardari. In the buoyant mood of the return to democracy it is only just that Aitzaz become a custodian of the rule of law either as prime minsiter or the president. But, I doubt this will happen, even though all parties now want a national government, the two main parties won’t support a national figure.

Once the judiciary is restored, if the PML-N and the PPP actually do it, what will become of Aitzaz who made the issue a cause célèbre?** When Zardari spoke to Newsweek that he was the PPP’s most famous member, he made the error exiles do who have returned after a long sojourn. He just wasn’t up to date. While Zardari maybe have been the most famous member of the PPP after his spouse in the 90’s, it was for all the wrong reasons. This decade belongs to Aitzaz. Whether he is allotted an institutional role or not, it seems the man who came out of the wilderness to defend a hero (Chaudhry Iftikhar), ended becoming one himself. **
