a friend of urs sends u the scoop of the century.. the friend sends u in an email a mug shot of the neighbour and tells u he is a sex offender.. u investigate with the police department and find out that he has not registered as an offender… ur editor wants a hot story from u because frankly speaking u are boring… do u go ahead and investigate about this person and publish the mug shot and story in the newspaper?

Was his first story where he was convicted as a sex offender not published earlier ? If it was then this story is not hot , it is a stale story. If he is not registered as a sex offender in your area you have mug shot investigate the story , if it was not published earlier and it if it true then you go ahead and publish the story , it is your journalistic duty to keep the public informed.

Sex offenders are required by law (in US anyway) to register with the local police dept. Further, the local population has the right to know that there is a registered sex offender in their area. In my town (not sure about others), we receive a mug shot, name, address, work address and criminal record of any sex offender within our town, its sent from the police dept to all the schools and the schools send the notice home with each student.
SOOOOO.
First the journalist should contact the local police dept who can investigage the very valid concern that there may (or may not) be a sex offender living there. The complainant will very likely receive the answer long before it becomes known to anyone else and so will still have the "scoop of the century"

1) The friend needs investigation because:
a) The friend knows too much about sex offenders that have moved in your
area, perhaps the friend is a sex offender stalker. (Joke)
b) You should first check out the story of the friend and get proof that he/she really is an offender from a different region. You don't wanna look silly if you are asked to provide evidence.
c) You need to be sure that it him/her find traits, there could be similar looking person but not the same, also could change identity to a different name.
2) After finding out that he is not registered the police will take steps to register him. They are unlikely to work with a journalist on a whim. After seeing the evidence they will get the persons mug shot published anyway.
3) The only way to get the hot story is to write it before officially informing the police. Which will mean you will need to obtain police records unofficially
4) Your concern will be more about making a headline article rather than protecting the communities interests.
5) If frankly speaking the journalist is boring then it does not matter how many attempts to make life interesting the result will be boring.

If you are sure, can provide evidence, but it will mean less money because spending time to get real data will inevitably take the impact away from the newsflash, but then it is game of morals. Money vs Surety

let me add that there is temptation that posting mug shots of suspected criminals is completely fine in the country i live and the libel laws are very loose... there is very less consequences of posting the story.. should i still not do it?
