Plex - Media Server / Services

So I’ve been looking at and contemplating getting this setup but something was holding me back. Partly I was apprehensive that it may be developed by one our popular 3 letter agencies and the (suiing) 4 letter orgs might be in cahoots with them.
But I finally gave in and started downloading and setting this thing up.

According to Plex:
“Plex gives you one simple interface to organize all of your media: your movie and TV collection, your music library, and all of your photos and home videos. Plex enriches your media library by adding descriptions, plot summaries, posters and album covers. Enjoy your media on every TV in the house or on any mobile device on the go.”

First step was to install and download this on my home PC, with a mapped NAS drive where I have some media. It seems to share everything out and I can pick it up on my Android app and it plays the media. I added an online station and that seems to play on the phone but I don’t know yet if its picking it up from the home PC or directly from their web/streaming server.

Secondly, the control center on the PC is web-based but I can’t connect to it from another computer. Its probably the daemon permissions which I will be looking at next.

Has anyone else set Plex up in their home/office environment who would like to share any words of wisdom? Please feel free.

It definitely is pretty and provides a very nice interface. I might firewall it in and test it out first. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Re: Plex - Media Server / Services

I’ve been using it for past few months and love it. I installed it on win2k8r2 in my VM lab, I don’t think it should be on a home pc… working with 5k songs, close to 2.5k movies (half of them 1080p) so it will just slow the pc down so you better dedicate resources to it.

I tried Twonky as it came free with the NAS couple of years ago but I wanted something better, not integrated with NAS. I did not like how twnky worked so plex is a nice alternative, works great with Roku3 as well!

For media manager, try this URL

For streaming over LTE, etc. I think it syncs over PLEX network and there is some type of caching happening on the phone as it reserves 4GB of space for sync.

Re: Plex - Media Server / Services

I've tried to stream content to my PlayStation 4 via browser but it crashes on it. Working fine on my phone and other devices. All in all, it's pretty cool.

You should also try Plex for home threater.
