From your post it seems that the last time you've played video games was back in the 90's. The current consoles now are XBox 360, PS3 and Wii.
XBox 360 and PS3 are more powerful from a technical standpoint but the Wii has the new "wii-mote" motion sensing controller, which allows for a different type of gaming experience.
As far as games go, XBox 360 and PS3 have similar lineups, with some exclusives here and there. Franchises that were traditionally Playstation exclusives have been showing up on the XBox 360 though. Some notable examples are Final Fantasy (main series), Devil May Cry, Tekken. MGS4 is still exclusive to the PS3. The Wii has different types of games that use the wii -mote, such as wii fit, wii sports and more that I may not be familiar with. Wii also has Nintendo franchises such as Mario, Zelda and such. Another cool feature with all the consoles is that they have downloadable games, which include old school games and possibly even user-made games.
