Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

It is a dangerous course that Nawaz Sharif has embarked upon - for the nation decidedly, no lesser for him too. His call for settling matters on the street is a double-ender; it cuts both ways. Wielding the street power for deciding what has to be at the ballot box, legislative chambers or political forums is a very dicey enterprise. Sooner than later, it boomerangs on the initiator, as is happening in these very days in Thailand, if at all Mian Sahib wants to know. A few months ago, the opposition’s street mob kept the government emasculated perpetually, which had to step down, albeit after a widely-questioned court ruling that declared the ruling party’s poll victory tainted. Its opponents subsequently took over, but to be administrated their own medicine by the fallen government’s street mobs, keeping them crippled in their rule. This alone should wise up Mian Sahib to what a hornet’s nest is he stirring up with his indisputably undemocratic method. One can understand his frustrations, and even empathize with him. But the precedent he is setting will come to haunt him no lesser. If his fortunes change, which may, given this country’s unbeatable repute for political miracles, and if he comes to power, his adversaries will try his own method on him. Street power will replace the ballot box for change of governments; and street muscle will become the decider of contentious issues instead of the legislatures or political forums. And another younger sibling will be singing war songs in the street rallies. He will then rue, and so would more screamingly this wretched nation blessed with a political class gifted with the sole talent of matchless short-sightedness. So in his own interest, he must abandon this dangerous course, and seek out political solutions to his essentially political difficulties. Of course, the initiatives must come from the presidency. With his impetuous rigidity, he has painted himself into a corner from where he cannot now wriggle out himself. He needs a helping hand, which President Zardari alone can extend to him by way of a face-saver, which he should in the supreme national interest. Indeed, with their brinkmanship, both have pushed the country to a precipice from which it needs to be pulled back urgently. What blindness indeed is it that has possessed the two that they are engrossed in their own power plays, totally unmindful of the grave threat being posed dauntingly to this nation’s very existence by a monstrous extremism with its deep roots both inside and outside the country? It is unity, not confrontation, among the political partisans that is required imperatively to overcome it decisively. They all must bear in mind that after military ruler Siad Barre’s ouster in Somalia, the powerful clan chiefs fell to fighting between themselves to capture the throne of Mogadishu, the country’s capital. None succeeded; all were left with carving out their own fiefdoms. But their fighting threw the country in such a turbulence that it soon became a free-for-all game park for predators of all sorts. And today it exists only on the maps; on the ground, it is just a wild land of warring tribes, criminal gangs, jihadi outfits and a battleground of its neighbouring countries’ proxy wars. Our partisans should harbour no delusion whatsoever if we are not inching the same way. We are, palpably. The law and order situation all over the country has just gone to the dogs. Criminality is galore. And, more frighteningly, extremism has assumed dreadful proportions, a measure of which can be had from the tough fighting the military has to put up in Bajaur to subdue the militants and the tough resistance it had faced from Fazlullah’s brigands in Swat where his equally obscurant father-in-law Sufi Muhammad is now calling the shots virtually as ruler. If even now the political partisans do not get their act together, the situation will just spin out of control, impossible even for the armed forces to reverse, as it happened in Somalia. So both Nawaz and Zardari must roll up their power enterprises and start attending intently to these existential threats to the country. Both must know the electorate has given them a deeply fractured mandate. They must respect this mandate and act sanely. And Nawaz should understand eventful revolutions are made only when people are with you, which they are not either with him or with Zardari. Rent-a-crowd and party activists make for street agitation and more trouble, not a revolution.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

Mr. Nawaz Shariff and Lawyer have decided that martail law would be better than PPP government.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

They have already waited for almost an year... they have had enough of dialogs and promises. They wanted matters to be solved in assemblies. With promises made in public being broken, national assembly being overruled by president and provincial government being taken over by governor, do they really have another option?

So you basically agree with me that Martail Law would be better than Democracy. Specially PPP Government. And ofcourse after Martail Law is impose Retd CJ Iftkar would be inrestated and PMLN Government would be instale after breaking up of Parlaiment Just like it happen during Gen Zia. I all for it.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

^ Well, if we get martial law, Iftikhar would not be reinstated because he was fired in the first place because of differences with the military.. specially regarding the 'missing persons' case.

CJ Iftikhar might summon Mushy to court if he is ever reinstated. This is the reason why Zardari can so boldly refuse to reinstate him. Establishment doesn't really want CJ back.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

Man Army has been soo defamed because of last 2 years of Musharaf that I dont think any general would have the courage of a coup!

Its time for a revolution now!!

I am all out for a revolution but we do not have history of revolution in our blood. General do not courage or brain they just take over.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

"Think Mr Nawaz Sharif".... "think" & "Nawaz Sharif" are unusable in one sentence.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

^ exactly :rotfl: :hehe: :rotfl:

Nawaz would ceraintly not want the army to take over…cuz the army hates these Sharif brothers more than anyone else in the country. Nawaaz has never got along with any army chief because our army doesnt like to get bossed around by an incompetent loser.

I think if the dharna or long March got out of hand and there were violent street protests against the government the army might not impose martial law but ask both Zardari and Gilani to go home (just like former COAS Gen. retd. Kakar did in 1993 when he asked both President Ghulam Ishaq Khan and PM Nawaz Sharif to go home and fresh elections were held 3m later)

  • dismiss present judiciary and set up an independent election commission
  • let the assemblies function as usu. until new elections
  • let an independent care-taker set-up comprising technocrats (whose members will not contest the election) take over the affairs of the state until fresh elections in 6m.

it maybe highly wishful but this is what I would like to see. I am just fed up with the incompetence and nikamapan of both PPP and PML (both Q & N). It's high time new people with fresh ideas were given a chance to steer the country out of the present mess.

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

^^ I guess this is the way out...

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

To All who says it is Sharif's who are promoting agitation in Pakistan, it is them you might de-rail the democracy from the country and bla bla bla..

Lets Suppose that after 9 years of Military Rule all politicians have learned their lessons and are willing to work together.

So,

Is this not Zardari who Imposed the Governor Rule on Punjab? yet the assembly was their and as Shahbaz Sharif was dis-qualified, the House could have selected a new leader... According to some political analysts, it was nice gesture from Shahbaz to immediately leave the office after hearing the verdict. So why the governor rule was imposed.. why didn't the assembly was told to call a session and elect a leader?
A Small protest is enough to justify the governor rule in Punjab?

Zardari, Made and broke several promises, Now a person who openly says that breaking a promise is not a big deal ( please refer to his statements when he broke the first accord saying it was just a promise and not quran or hadees), can a person like him to be trusted??? can anyone from us, would like to deal with zardari like person? So!!! can we blame shareef's for not trusting Zardari anymore?

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

^ We minght not want him as president but we can use Zardari in our dealings with India. He is as deceiving as Indian politicians! ;)

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

Looks like the massive fiery rallies in Punjab are causing some heartburn. Well, if you want Nawaz to think, why did the PPP give an 'ungle' to the Punjab Govt by instating Governor rule. PML[N] has all the right to protest, and hell even get rid of Zardari in the process.

^^

PPPP might help nawaz sharif in due course and get rid of zardari and bhutto element once for all...

Yes we need deceivers like him to deal with west and India.

If everything that you mentioned as list happens (army kicks out both AZ and new elections are held 6months later) how would that guarantee new people with fresh ideas? As any election from current lot will make one or the other crook as PM and President.

ehtasab bhaijan. Don't give up hope so quickly. If the unthinkable happens, then remember, Qazi Hussain and Imran Khan did not take part in the last elections. They could be the new faces (President and PM) of Pakistan. :)

Re: Please Think Mr. Nawaz Shariff

^^ Remember.. Qazi is Retiring in April...
