That’s a great idea for several reasons. First, if you’re trying to switch to healthier eating, Ramadan is the best time to challenge yourself to make healthier life choices- in every sense. Also, our empty stomachs really shouldn’t be hit with all these heavy, spicy foods. I know my digestive system can’t handle it well, so eating less oily food is also good for making the next day’s rosa easier.
Yes, salad is a must. In fact, I think replacing the fried iftari foods with a salad makes a good transition to dinner. My family has a hard time eating both iftari and dinner, so this year I’m thinking kajoor + salad, Maghrib, then dinner. And less curries on the menu will prevent the wave of sleep that can come after dinner.
I was thinking of starting a similar thread but i wanted people to share healthy iftar ideas, no frying, may be baked, grilled and of course salads and chaats. Reha can you modify the thread asking guppies to share their healthy iftar recipes or i can make a separate thread for this. Sorry for hijacking your thread. I am really thinking to avoid fried pakoras and samosas this Ramadan and shed some weight :hinna:
and to answer your question, i always, i mean ALWAYS, make fruit chaat for iftar. It has been kind of a tradition in our family to open iftaar with khujoor or water and then before any other food item, have fruit chaat first. Us ke baad pakoray, samosay, rolls jo marzi khao!
My bhabhi bakes her samosas, rolls, and kabobs… It tastes great. I plan on doing the same this year.
I will be using brown bread, brown rice, and 100% wheat no oil rotis.
^ My sister actually makes parathay from organic whole wheat stone ground flour and a touch of olive oil. That is one heavyyyyyy paratha dude! The only issue I saw with this is that these rotis or parathay cannot be stored to be eaten later…they become dry and hard very fast.
One of my summer favorites is melon chaat! Honey dew, watermelon, cantaloupes and you can also add blue berries and grapes. Sprinkle some black pepper, touch of fake salt, touch of sugar or splenda if you wish and its awesomeness!
I also plan on doing this ..plz reha if it’s possible can u ask ur bhai how’s he makes it .. Coz whenecver I make.. The dough gets bards if I try to add water it gets sticky… N in the end I get a dry paratha…
We will be doing oatmeal (not me ).. Protein shake.. N whole wheat roti…
plus fruit chaat , baked chicken fish. Sometimes stir fry with veryyy less oil… N soups…
recipes for soups will be appreciated too
N yes we will be doing fresh juices also
Yes, they can only be eaten fresh. The corners also do not always turn out perfect b/c it is very hard to get the atta smooth. However, I use a mixer so it makes perfect dough even without oil. Also, I find that it is easier to handle dough if you let it sit for a little while.
I just put it in the oven… I made some today to try and they were sooo crispy and good!! Except for the color, nothing was different between the baked ones and the fried.
One little tip.. i slit open a date and take the seed out, but put an almond inside instead.
Last Ramadhan i had a lot of left over dates, so put them in the food processor with dessicated coconut and almonds and whizzed it until it formed a dough. Made them into little bite size balls. Dates can also be frozen.. then will never become rock hard, but will become lie chewy caramel. Perfect for sweet tooths
I am thinking of introducing chicken/egg sandwiches into our iftars instd of pakoras IA. I would love to make soups too but my husband is not so fond of them so i have to seek other alternatives.baking samosas and rolls is a great idea. I will definitely try it out.
My first attempt at nothing fried iftari:
Fruit chat, date, chicken malai boti, vegetables side and cucumber raita.

Dear Reha… Ramadan Kareem!!!
I am so excited to share some Ramadan recipes with you. I love cooking and I do experiments in cooking. For this Ramadan I thought of making variety of dishes each day. I used to refer healthy Ramadan Recipes, which helped me to try on variety Iftar dishes. I am sure you will love this. I would be great if you could make region based dishes on each day, like Arabian, Lebanese, Kuwaitian etc.
