Pakistan admits having 182 Indian prisoners
A total of 182 Indian prisoners, including five women, have been languishing in Pakistani jails on “unknown charges” since their last war in 1971 and many have lost memory, an official report has disclosed.
Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao will present the report in the Senate, The News reported on Wednesday.
This is the first time the Pakistan Government has officially recorded data of Indian prisoners, many of whom mistakenly strayed into the country.
The Indian government had last year handed over a list of 54 citizens believed to be in Pakistani jails. This was among the confidence building measures between the two countries.
There is no trace of the 54, but the interior ministry, after a hectic survey of Pakistani jails, has identified 182 Indian prisoners.
Of these, 30 are Muslims and a few Christians. The rest are Hindus or Sikhs.
The report does not say if the prisoners were ever produced before courts or formally charged.
It also fails to explain what charges were framed against the prisoners and whether arrangements were made with the Indian government to facilitate their release.
It also does not say if the government planned to release the prisoners. The jails where the prisoners are lodged are also not named.
According to the report, the government gave consular access to only 50 Indian prisoners.
A number of prisoners, according to the sources in the ministry, have lost their memory and are suffering from depression and psychiatric problems.
