My Mum is a doctor in London. I know that this is an international site, but I was hoping that someone would still be able to help me with this query. English is my first language, but this was written a bit hastily. My Dad is Pathan. He is from the North West of Pakistan. I was collecting some information about my family tree for a school project. I had spoken to my Dad and my grandmother. He is said that my dad’s family belongs to the Afridi tribe of Pathans and they came from the village of Urmar. Some of our tribe’s people invited our relatives from India to come live with them when they had just emigrated. Some of the immediate members could not speak Pashto. They don’t know where Urmar is located. The village of this name is located in 3different areas of KPK (Peshawar, Karak, Tank) and 2 areas in the Tribal Belt (Orakzai Agency and North Waziristan). The Ormuri tribe, which is a sub-section of the Afridi tribe, is from South Waziristan. My family thinks that they have a Yusufzai background. The dialect of Pashto says a lot about where a person is from. ‘Urmar’ is said to mean fire. However, in most Pashto dictionaries ‘fire’ is translated as ‘Ur’. In which dialect of Pashto does ‘Urmar’ mean fire? Or does it mean something completely different? Are these six different villages’ settlements of the Ormari tribe from South Waziristan? The Afridi tribe are said to originate from Khyber Agency, Frontier Region Peshawar and Frontier Region Kohat? Could it mean that my Dad is from there? Hospitality is a huge aspect of Pathan culture. Could it be that they let my family members from India stay with them until they were settled after the Partition of India into the independent countries of Pakistan and India (it was a stressful time – one million people died in the Partition)? My relatives might have made friends with Afridi Pathans in Pilibheet, Uttar Pradesh, India? They might be Seraiki, Punjabi or Pahari. However, Pathans (especially the Afridi) are so fierce that they make friends only with other Pathans? What could could be the answers?
Re: Please help me with this query.
Interesting , wish I could help but I am simply clueless about this . How about you speak some of the senior citizens or arrange meeting with heads of some of the tribes that you mentioned and ask them about their input ? might help you narrow down your search
