My now almost two yr old doesn’t know how to chew…she can bite with her front teeth and with much struggle, I have taught her how to bite with the molar as well…But she only bites once…no matter how much I try and tell her to continue chewing…nope she only chews once or tries to swallow whole…which results in her gagging and vomiting..I don’t know what to do…
How did you guys teach your kids how to chew their food…I always thought that chewing comes naturally..but I have been proven wrong.
P.s. we do eat together …so she sees us chewing and will get encouraged..but nothing of that happens…she simply doesn’t wanna chew..she either tries to swallow without chewing or simply spits it out.
i dont have any suggestions for the chewing issue, but until you figure it out how about reducing the size of the “lukhma” you give so that even if she swallows it there’ no chance of choking/ gagging/ vomiting.
My daughter was swallowing small pieces of roti well before she popped her first tooth.
If kids have been fed pureed foods for too long and havent been introuduced lumpier foods early thy have problems chewing. There is a 2 month window from 7-9 months where a child will chew food as a reflex reaction. most of us miss that and think they have to have pureed foods which then causes future problems like ur facing.
u need to introduce lumpy foods slowly until she is ready to accept more solid food. Also, the gagging reflex can also be a natural reflex when children eat solids, it doesnt always mean theyre choking. i had this problem with my daughter, who had reflux problem. now she is 4 and eats fine. I started solids early with my now 11 month old and he is much better at accepting solids. take one step at a time with her
you may want to make kichri…cook it in chicken broth and make it runny/soft.
give small bites and work your way up. take at least 3 full weeks of trying before you give up.
as your baby begins to adapt, adjust the consistency of the kichri and start adding things to it like peas, carrots and potatoes.
my kid was like this, hated chewing, gagged on the mildest of texture until almost 2. my wife even bullied the pediatrician into giving her a referral to some occupational therapist or speech therapist or something. same week, the bacha started chewing things. also, my kid was weird in that she would almost never pick up stuff lying around and put it in her mouth like most babies do. not sure if its related.
I had the same issue. You need to make sure you start introducing solid foods. I had to teach her how to chew literally. How to crush things using different teeth.
my nephew, who is almost 3 still hates to bite with his front teeth…he always turns to the side of his mouth to bite something like an apple. sis had him check out and the teeth are fine…perhaps just a habit the dr. suggested.
yesterday I was helping him eat timbits and when he would turn his head I would move the food to the front again…eventually he gave up avoiding me and bit from the front. guess he really wanted the doughnut.
If you live in the US you should call early intervention and seek evaluation from an occupational therapist and feeding specialist if the problem doesn’t go away!
