I was trying to register a specific domain and I found out the the domain was not available. The domain was registered about ten year ago but it is not active though. It is not available for purchase either.
I tried various combinations and still no luck. I got so frustrated and started to do some research on many lame domain names they were all taken. I was thinking I am sure that no one has registed a lame domain name like eat****.com and low behold it was registered about 10 years ago. Look at this Internic data.
Domain Name: EAT****.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, LLC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: REDIR-01.PREMIUMTRAFFIC.COM
Name Server: REDIR-02.PREMIUMTRAFFIC.COM
Status: clientTransferProhibited
Updated Date: 04-apr-2007
Creation Date: 15-sep-1999
Expiration Date: 15-sep-2008
This domain is not active either it points to gettiffany.com which is an online game . gettiffany.com was registered only a couple of years ago.
I wonder who are those people who register a domain and have no use for it and keep on paying the registration fee year after year ? What do they get out of it ?
On the same note I discussed this with one of my friend then we started to explore the ideas of a 800 number 1-800-eat-**** and advertise this number as this:
Feeling low and down call 1-800-eat-**** and when caller calls he gets a message saying:
if you want to eat more **** press 1 now.
This 800 number is taken by the way. I wonder who has taken it and what are they doing with it ? I do feel like calling and find out.

Ok , no need to explain , I googled it.
Re: Please do not click if you are offended by profanity .
It's called investment bro. I have domains that have no use for me but I know they will be worth something down the road.

Mirch Bhai:
I am concerned why do you want such a “sitaaroN kee zabaan walaa” domain name to begin with:halo:?

Don't they have rules against Cyber Squaters? You may still make money on those domains, but I doubt it will be really big bucks.

It's only cyber squatting if you are holding on to a domain which is a company name or something. Holding coffee.com or cars.com is not really cybersquatting.
Re: Please do not click if you are offended by profanity .
I agree, if its a generic name, it won't be cyber squatting. Not sure what what cricketplaya was referring to. But the best way to proof against a squatting claim is to show that yes your site's name is a generic basmati.com but you are actually providing info on all kinds of basmati rice. Now if Zebra Basmati rice folks want to buy the domain, they'd have to pay some serious bucks.
Re: Please do not click if you are offended by profanity .
You have more chance of getting hit by lightning then making big bucks on a domain name now a days. All the catchy ones have been taken already. I bought a domain from a guy for 200 dollars and he had that domain for 10 years nobody wanted it although it is a very catchy one but nobody saw any value other than I so I bought it . I am sure this guy ended up loosing on his investment and just wanted to run with whatever he can get for it after 10 years of holding on to it.
Abay bahi I do not want it I got pissed when I did not get any combination of the domain I originally wanted and then I thought let me see if something this lame is available or it has been registered. It wassssssssssssss.

Re: Please do not click if you are offended by profanity .
Let's look at the example of .cm domain names. Kevin Ham of Vancouver, Canada who made a deal with the Cameroon government to point all non-registered .CM domain names to his site agoga.com - try www.paklinks.cm (it happens all the time) now imagine with millions of .COMs... Now this guy has a $300 million domain portfolio...

Well at $10/year, even if someone is willing to pay $200, you would still make a profit.

10 years ago domain name registration used to be 50 dollars a year. I know because I registered a couple in those days too. I do not remember when it started to drop down as I got out of the game for some years.
Re: Please do not click if you are offended by profanity .
true say! now with coupons you can get a .com for $6! also with bulk registerations.. even cheaper...
