Ditto.

Whatever you read, don't miss Bano Qudsia's Raja Gidh. A must read.

For non-fiction, Steven Hawkin's A brief History of time.

Another Urdu book i'll recommend is "Ali'Poor ka Ailee" by Mufti Sahib.....Es book ko Urdu ka guru garanth saab kehtay heiN....and insha ji said ...ke es book ko aisay hi paRhna chaiay jesay hammaray sikh bhai "Garanth saab" paRhtay heiN....Choki pe rakh ke morchhal ke neechay beth ke:)

Ciao

naiko

know any places I can get my hands on the "gentlemen" books. The clowns here at the desi store have a limited selection.

Or I will have to wait until someone is coming from Pakistan. I know Azkar's wifey is in Pak, maybe I can get him to get her to get them for me..such a long process.

as far as enlgish books go. I would recommend the entire foundation series by asimov and Rama series by clark.

moi sci fi fan.

I would recommend that you read Rama .. but don't read any further..

it gets worse.. but most probably you will jus because you wan' to find out what happens next... my advice DONT..

i wanted to break something after i read the third and fourth

AHHHH

Black Zero I agree, only read it to find out what happens in the end, the dewd had an amazing concept, too good but wanted to put a closure on it too soon and thus killed the latter books.

Fraud Bhai…i just checked it for u…sang-e-meel has both books:)
Go to www.sang-e-meel.com
but they don’t accept credit cards yet…so u have to send them a check and they’ll mail u the books…

PS. they do have an excellent collection of books…

Oh haaN Asif don't miss "Metamorphosis" by Kafka......

The book which I will recommand is
"RAJA GIDH".If you believe in thought provoking book then I will say that "RAJA GIDH" is the book of next century.
For poetry I will suggest Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
For humor I will tell any book by Mushtaq Yousafi.
For romantic novel I will give you the name of Rahim Gul's "Tun Tarara".
For travel stories everybody's favorite Mustanser Hussain Tarar.
I don,t read historic novels.I like to read
history.So sorry about that.
And for afsana I will send you to Munshi Prem
Chand and especially his book "HUM PAGAL HAIN".

Thankoo everyone for all those suggestions :)
Special thanx for Naikoo :)

I started reading Yousufi's Zargazisht for tanz o mizaaH but couldn't finish it...it started well and then...god, who wants to read about his adventures in banking?!! (he does have a wonderful stlye of writing though==the section on the adaab of eating kebabs in Delhi was brilliant!! and I love his constant interjections of Ghalib et al.)
Perhaps I will try his other books...

Ahmad Faraz --he is one of my fave . :)

Hitchhiker's guide--not my style of SF! (I like REAL SF)

Razia BuTT --read a few of her books. v. good :)Sharmeeli I haven't yet read...will do so :)

..I tried to find Raja Gidh in the lib. but it was not there...(the local libaray does urdu books too :))...WILL insha Allah read it...

started the english transl. of udaas naslein by abdullah hussain himself..didn't finish it..might read the urdu instead...

Brief History of Time --read. okay.

(Note: You should read "Surely, Your're Joking Mr. Feynman!" by R. Feynman, Nobel physicist --THAT is awesome :))

...

Asif,
Can’t suggest any urdu (have only read translations, and Romanized urdu shairi (can’t read urdu

Waisay kisee nay "Dastaan-e-ameer hamza" parrhi hai kya?

Khurram have u read Hemingway's "Sun Also Rises"....i like that one...

Austin...hmmm:)...is too zanana ....angrezi ki bushra rehman or salma kanwal:)i'll its better to watch 2 hr movie based on her novels than reading those lengthy novels:)
