A nationwide effort to help the homeless expands again in 2006. The weekend of October 14-15 will see the event in 14 cities across the country: Baltimore MD, Baton Rouge LA, Boston MA, Chicago IL, Dallas TX, Detroit MI, Houston TX, Las Vegas NV, Los Angeles CA, Newark NJ, New Orleans LA, New York NY, Portland OR and Washington DC. We are prepared to serve over 20,000 homeless individuals and families. This concerted effort will make the 5th Humanitarian Day for the Homeless the largest national humanitarian effort during the month of Ramadan.

The Coalition to preserve Human Dignity, The ILM foundation and Islamic Relief with the help of the Ummah Clinic are planning on having a Humanitarian Day on October 15th, 2006 from 10am-4pm (Towards the end of Ramadan).
The purpose of the event is to help out the less fortunate in one of the most poorest areas of Los Angeles. Residents of the area with be given Hygiene Kits, Free Medical Screening, Clothing, and provisions. We need about 300-400 Volunteers from the Orange County Area.

As part of their commemoration of the month of Ramadan, Muslims in 15 cities across the country will gather on October 15 th to provide food, medicine and social services to homeless populations as part of the 5th annual Humanitarian Day. In Los Angeles, hundreds of volunteers will gather at Skid Row from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and are expected to serve more than 3,000 homeless and needy Angelenos.
The commitment of gratitude and equality pervades throughout the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. With the growing number of women and children becoming part of the homeless community, the need for food is not sufficient – proper health screenings, flu shots, clothing, raincoats, hygiene packs, water, and toys are just as vital. To address this need, the Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity (CPHD) is hosting the Humanitarian Day for the Homeless in Los Angeles . Islamic Relief and ILM Foundation partnered to develop a national committee responsible for coordinating Humanitarian Day in 15 cities nation wide, making it the largest Ramadan Humanitarian effort led by Muslims in the United States.
“Serving the homeless and those in need is our duty as Muslims, we are not doing anyone any favor, it is their right and we are happy to be of service,” said Imam Saadiq Saafir, founder of the ILM Foundation ,and one of the founders of Humanitarian Day.
During Ramadan, Muslims are to develop sympathy for the less fortunate, and learn thankfulness and appreciation for all of God’s blessings. In the holy month, just as Muslims deny themselves from eating from dawn to dusk, they increase their givings to others by acts such as providing donations to the poor.
The Coalition to Preserve Human Dignity is a grassroots, multi-faith based non-profit organization established to promote activities that complement and strengthen the diversity among humanity, while bridging the gap between the extreme disparities that exist.

WHERE: Towne Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles
(Between 4th and 5th Streets)
Each person attending the event will receive a warm meal and a gift package including hygiene and emergency kits, bath towels, clothing, blankets, ponchos and toys for children. In addition, critical health services will be provided free of charge, including a health screening, HIV/AIDS screenings, flu vaccinations, educational materials and referral information. There will also be various booths staffed by community organizations that offer social and health services.
