Disclaimer.. I know nothing about the video games so please be nice n clear!
so if someone loves video games and you have to buy a gift for them.. budget is around $200-300…what will you buy them? and no they don’t own any of these and will never buy it for themselves.. any recommendations, suggestions etc?
I will like to take advantage of the black friday deals and buy it in advance but I have no idea what to look for or get! Thanks

Are you looking for a console only or do you also consider handhelds?
How old is the person you’re shopping for?
What kind of games do they like?
How important is online gaming for you (well for them really)?
How often do/would they play games?
I can list you the pros and cons for the different consoles/handhelds later on but if I know this I can give you an informed suggestion.

I am just exploring options if it will be a good idea to buy someone a video game instead of the typical gifts.. I cant ask them too many questions since it’s supposed to be a surprise.. otherweise I will be told NO

Well, consoles and handhelds are mainly different in terms of what they offer. For certain genres, I’d say that handhelds would be a better choice. Well the other thing I would suggest is to see what his friends have (if you know). For his age, I’d say that you should go for either an XBox 360 or PS3.
To pick one out of those I would say the only way to do it is to find out something that he likes. Much of what they both offer is the same, so it comes down to exclusives.
For myself, I went with the XBox 360. For one thing, I am a fan of the Halo series, which is a Microsoft franchise. Another thing that drew me in that direction was the fact that you could develop your own games for the XBox 360 (but that proved to be a bit more complex than I first thought).
So the safest bet would be to just buy one with a gift receipt, so he can always exchange it if he prefers the other.

All we know about the person in question is that he likes gaming. We don’t know anything about the games, genres or platforms that he likes. Might just be a fan of an MS franchise. So something with the gift receipt would be ideal.

most of the good games are multiplatform in xbox 360.. even though iam huge fan of halo,gears,mass effect,fable,lost odyssey,alan wake e.t.c number of exclusives with ps3 is just too much,sony have like 20 first party studios.they keep on delivering quality games every year..also for newcomers graphics matters, ps3 has the best looking games. best part no need to pay for online unlike xbox 360
anyway as a hardcore gamer from fps to rpg i would own both the consoles
EDIT:also if ur more into mp,it depends on which platform u have more friends

I know about Sony’s first party games. Yes, PS3 has more first party exclusives. However, we don’t know anything about the person who this is being bought for. So the best thing to do IMO is to buy something with a gift receipt, and that way they have the option of exchanging it if they happen to like the other console better.

That’s all fine and good. I’ve known about what’s available on PS3 when I decided to go with the XBox 360. I know what Sony’s franchises are and what MS has as well. Even then, I’ll go with the XBox 360 if I had to choose between the two, because the games that I want more are on that console. Sure I’d love to try Valkyria Chronicles and FF vs 13.
So all I’m suggesting to the topic starter is to get a gift receipt with whichever console so that the recipient can exchange it if they want to.

PS3 sounds appealing but I didn’t find anything for less than $300.00 so that is on hold for now!!

I am planning to get this tomorrow.. with this deal you get $50.00 Target gift card and $10.00 off of every $100.00 purchase so basically it will be $140.00 and that $50.00 can be used to buy games later!

Everyone have a PC. So I suggest purchase $50 Graphics Card and use it.
