Anil Kumble’s decision to bowl in the current test despite a broken jaw is very commendable as it is very difficult and requires a lot of courage. I can recall at least two other instances where players with serious injuries played to help out their team.
In the 80’s Malcolm Marshall broke his arm ( not the bowling arm), playing against England at Headingley, came back from the hospital with his arm in plaster and bowled England out taking 5 wickets.
In the 70’s Sadiq Mohammed(broken Jaw) and Wasim Raja(broken ankle) both batted at Karachi together against Windies and saved the match.
Anyone knows of anyother instances? (serious injuries only)
Imran in his autobiography mentioned a match where Walsh broke Saleem Malik's playing hand (or arm, not sure). And Malik still batted on to save the match for Pakistan. The truly amazing thing was that supposedly he would face one delivery right handed and the next one left handed because of the excruciating pain. I haven't seen or heard about this match anywhere but Imran mentioned it when he was talking about what his main criterion for picking his players was - guts to stand up and be counted when it matters the most.
BTW, Kumble seems to be bowling very well. He got Lara and could have had Hooper too going by Cricinfo commentary.
“WatCh youR tHoughtS; they become words. WatCh youR wOrdS; they become actions. WatCh youR aCtiOns; they become habits. WatCh youR hAbiTs; they become character. WatCh youR chaRactEr; it becomes your dEsTinY."
Another proof of his passion and pride he has in playing for his country.
Recently, Srinath was hit by a Dilhara Fernando delivery on his left hand and had a fracture in his left hand. He bowled in both the Sri Lankan innings despite of that.
These players are true champions, true heros.

I was just surprised and thought they would come up with new bowlers (players). Therefore I assume India hasn't as many talents as Pakistan has.

What would happen when the ball hits him on the injured area? The wise thing to do in such a condition would be to let the injury heal... This is probably the only mentionable bowler India has (and ever had) and if he gets injured before the wcup... Then India would have to rely on the really weak stuff...
I remember an instance where a Pakistani bowler (in the domestic scene) died as the ball hit some injured part of his head... In the second innings, the scoreboard simply said 'absent dead'...

Without overshadowing the courage, heroism and willingness of Kumble to compete i think he should have been rested. India was/is not in a bad position in the match.
Its like “I dont care abt my self but care for India” but see you are such a asset to India that caring your self is caring for India.
Anyway this was decision to be made by team management.
As far as other players are concerned i rem Salim Malik playing a game agains West Indies (1986) with a broken hand with plaster on it and he was batted single handedly to save test match agains Marshell, Ambrose and Walsh.

Since Kumble suffered the injury during the match, so if he had not bowled, India would have lost on a specialist bowler. So he did a brave thing by bowling (and getting Lara too) when Indians were trying to make a match of it by bowling WI out cheaply. With the match now drawing to an almost certain draw, I don't think Indian team management will be troubling Kumble much in this series. And he should fly home and get the required surgery to fix this thing up. He is 32 years old and a spinner. By keeping fit, he can have some more years of excellent cricket.
I think Kumble is a very decent bowler and that is why he has taken 318 test wickets and 290 ODI wickets. To say that his presence in the team somehow suggests that India does not have good bowlers is in quite poor taste. Pakistan still plays Akram and Younis. They are all good bowlers so they keep a place in the team.
Relax dear i m not supporting Salim for his act i just posted the link coz it was originally asked to post more replies abt the same case thats playing while injured.
And secondly Salim came out to pass 1 hours on the last day as 9 pakistan wickets were down had he not came out Pakistan would have lost the match without contest thats the positive point i could have extracted but i didnt even posted that
In Kumble’s case he still have to pass through all that heat and 4 days and that can be harmful for him in long run that was the only point i was trying to make. (as far as i can see i appriciated his effort of playing but did not supported the management’s decision to allow him to play)
so…take it easy and take THOSE glasses off your eyes

Well said Pristine.
Infect this is what mangement did today.yesterday he came to bowl becouse at that time 2-3 quick wickets could have made a great difference and fact that sachin was getting big turn encouraged team managment and Kumble to bowl.
