Klusener tops Man of the Tournament standings
ICC Media Release - 17 February 2003

South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener is top of the official Man of the Tournament standings for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 on Monday 17th February.

Klusener’s match-winning bowling against Kenya and his destructive late batting assault that almost snatched South Africa victory in the curtain-raiser against West Indies have put him in first place in the Man of the Tournament standings with five points.

A point behind Klusener, who was Man of the Tournament in 1999, is Holland’s Tim de Leede, whose bowling unsettled India and batting frustrated England in successive matches. The Dutchman shares second place with Wasim Akram (Pakistan), Herschelle Gibbs (South Africa) and Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka).

The Man of the Tournament is based on the cumulative Man of the Match results, awarded by the ICC Match Referee.

After every game the ICC Match Referee selects the top three players. As well as receiving a gold watch worth R12000, the Man of the Match also receives three points towards the Man of the Tournament award.

The second best player on the day receives two points and the third best gets one point.

ICC General Manager – Cricket, David Richardson said: “The ICC Match Referees all have a wealth of international experience. They keep a close eye on the whole match and are therefore well-placed to provide a verdict on the top performers.”

“The fact that those placed second and third also receive points towards the overall individual accolade makes the Man of the Tournament an interesting sub-plot to the main event.”

The ICC will provide further updates on the Man of the Tournament standings as the ICC CWC 2003 progresses.

insha’allah Wasim will win this award and that would be a befitting end to an illustriuos career :jhanda:

i think akram and jaisuriya have more chances to get this honour

I would have put Klusener on an outside chance with Wasim, Gibbs and Jayasuriya but the Springboks don't look like going too far this time around. ;)

i think Tim de Leede should get extra points considering the fact that holland is a minnow :halo:

wasim akram can very well take it....

asalmoalikum :jhanda:

mirpuri aka dream here

wat about shoaib akhtar he has taken 6 wickets from 2 matches so far why isn’t he on the standings plus he has bowled the fastest delivery ever recorded in a world cup measured at 98.9 mph during pak v namibia match burger was the batsmen for all of those who want to know.

Shoaib Akhtar took 4 of his 6 wickets against Namibia and that isn't something to be happy about. His performance against Australia was very ordinary. I expect him to get points later on in the tournament.

its not shoaib's fault that he didn't find his rhythm against the aussies but did against the namibians. the pitch which was used for pak v aus game was different o the pitch used against pak v nam so that could be a factor for cosideration.

  • its important to realise that a bowler needs time to adapt to the weather conditions on the day of the game and the conditions were slightly different when comparing the weather forecast for the 2 matches pakistan have played so far.

umair u said: Shoaib Akhtar took 4 of his 6 wickets against Namibia and that isn't something to be happy about.

WHY!!!!!! cos' they are the minnows of the game thats why, well have u heard of the saying; don't underestimate your opponent no matter how bad they might be but on their day they could out class u.

and i take you back into memory lane way back in 1964, aussies had just won the ashes against crappy england and afterwards they went to holland to play a friendly and the night before the game they were partying cos' they were complacent and what happened on the following day; the aussies lost the match, so u never know.

here is the latest standing :-

Sachin Tendulkar (Ind) 7, James Anderson (Eng) 6, Lance Klusener (SA) 5, Chaminda Vaas (SL) 5, Wasim Akram (Pak) 4, Tim de Leede (Hol) 4, Sourav Ganguly (Ind) 4, Herschelle Gibbs (SA) 4, Jason Gillespie (Aus) 4, Sanath Jayasuriya (SL) 4.

Tendi rules :k: Shabash…

We gotta qualify fr the next stage if Wasim has to take this award....

Howcome this Anderson guy has become “2nd”, just because he destroyed Pakistani batting in one game, makes him 2nd? Wasim Akram has 12 wickets.

Also, its very interesting to note that Shoaib Akhtar’s batting average of 72.0 in this tournament is next to Sachin Tendulkar :k: .

A batting star is born.

Because Anderson was not only man of the match against PAK he was man of the match against Holland also.(Took 4 wickets).

I feel Akhtar should open the batting with Saeed Anwar. If he gets out, no problem.. his wicket will hardly count for much as he is not in the team as a batsman and if he gets runs, those will be bonus runs for Pak.

where can I find the latest standing? any website has this stat?

OK found it, here it is; But I am not sure if this takes today’s match into account or not

Tendulkar v Vaas, as Tournament’s top batsman and bowler go head to head on Monday
ICC Media Release - 5 March 2003

The top batsman in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003 will face the top bowler when India play Sri Lanka at Wanderers on Monday.

India batsman Sachin Tendulkar has a two-point lead at the top of the Man of the Tournament rankings ahead of Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas.

Tendulkar is the only player in the tournament to have picked up three Man of the Match awards in the Group stage.

The India opener has already overtaken Javed Miandad to hold the highest aggregate of ICC CWC runs and has become one of two players along with Mark Waugh to have accumulated four ICC CWC centuries.

At this tournament Tendulkar has picked up his three Man of the Match awards for top-scoring with 81 against Zimbabwe, 152 against Namibia and 98 against Pakistan. He picked up a further point for his half century against Holland.

Vaas, the early leader in the Man of the Tournament standings, has been Man of the Match twice for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh, taking a hat-trick with his first three balls of the innings, and West Indies. He also picked up two points for his role in the record-breaking destruction of Canada.

Behind Vaas there are three players tied on six points - Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, England’s James Anderson and John Davison of Canada. All three will play no further part in the tournament.

The Man of the Tournament is based on the cumulative Man of the Match results awarded by the ICC Match Referee.

After every game the ICC Match Referee selects the top three players. As well as being presented with a gold watch worth R12000, the Man of the Match also receives three points towards the Man of the Tournament award.

The second best player on the day receives two points and the third best gets one point.

The ICC will provide further updates on the Man of the Tournament standings as the ICC CWC 2003 progresses.
