Planning Ramadan Dawats ..

So , we have already started recieving the dawat invitations , for iftar parties … and I am already getting excited and planning when when to start inviting people …

What do you guys think is the best time to invite people , first few roza’s or last few roza’s? I feel it will be difficult to work and pull up a dawat in the first few roza’s since they are really tough and the body is getting used to it all .. perhaps by the last ashra of Ramadan , we have better activity levels ?

What say?

Re: Planning Ramadan Dawats ..

It might sound rude, but since 2005 Earthquake we have stopped inviting people over on Iftar Dawats.

We used to do 2 Iftar dawats (one for friends and one for relatives) but now we send the money (equal to budget of two dawats) to a charity in Pakistan so they can buy Iftar for poor. My begum convinced me on this as it was her idea. He logic was that people we invite and feed are well-to-do people anyway who can buy and eat whatever they want (AKS) and that real deal would be to buy Iftar for poor who only do iftar with water perhaps because they cant buy these fruits and what not.

Some people appreciated the stance, some did "tarha tarha ki bateen" in the circle but as if my begum (and I) care.

Re: Planning Ramadan Dawats ..

we do dawats at the masjid.. since our masjid offers daily iftar, we pick a day and prepare food for everyone (usually for 50-60 people on week days and 100 on weekends) and I really enjoy that. :-)

it usually includes dates and juice/water to break the fast, pray maghrib, and then a full meal (rice, meat, vegetable, dessert, ) followed by chai! simple and awesome!

and for my own convienicine, I usually pick a day in second ashrah.. 1. I get teh idea of how many people usually come 2. people pick the first 10 days right away and I dont want to spend time cooking in last ten days when it very well can be used for ibadah!!

Re: Planning Ramadan Dawats ..

Decent , I think its a really good gesture , but from sawab perspective , I think its alright to invite friends over for iftar .. I normally stop any dawats 2-3 months before Ramadan and intentionally give iftar dawats because its not about the food , but about being together , breaking the fast together , praying together , which gathers alot more sawab ...

Obviously for charity what ever we do is a separate matter all together ... but friends shouldnt be ignored in the process .. hai na?

Re: Planning Ramadan Dawats ..

I don't do dawats in ramadan nor do I go to any, for the simple reason we go to taraweeh at the mosque. If we spent time entertaining, or being entertained then we wouldn't make it to the msoque, which would interrupt our taraweeh.

As for praying together, I pray with my husband and then with the jamaat for isha and taraweeh. My view is we have the entire year to entertain, so at least for one month we can devote ourselves to Allah. In fact its the least we can do. It also makes getting together on Eid all the more special, and then we have a number of gatherings. :)

As for feeding the masses in ramadan, I save that for the needy, rather than having a dawat to invite people over who allhamdolillah are able to feed themselves.

That said, if people want to pop in and open their fasts with us they're welcome to, as long as they realise we'll be heading off to the mosque shortly after. I expect my bro-in law will be around most days as he's living alone, and I'll also open my fasts with my parents and brother as they only live a 5 minute drive away from me, so it doesn't eat in to my ibadaah time.

However if I was going to attend a dawat, or throw one, I wouldn't do it in the first week or last 10 days.

In our area most of the community members participate in iftar party where we rent a hall and pitch in the money and each family makes one dish for 100 people or so. It's every saturday during ramadan so people pray magrib together eat dinner and then head to masgid for tarwain afterwards. I think this works out great as a community.
