Plane to Pakistan
June 8, 2000
By Dr Rajesh M. Basrur
We have all met the ‘enemy’ in our own ways: through tales of war, with their stark images of corpses and shattered limbs; through the repeated atrocities of self-proclaimed ‘freedom fighters’ uncaring of the innocent; and of course through the constant image of the ‘other’ lurking in our own minds. Some of us have met them in the flesh, almost always far from the subcontinent. Such encounters are usually polished, carefully conducted affairs, often very friendly and almost always with a subterranean caution that demands that both sides shun awkward topics. So, what are they really like? Are they different? Post-Kargil, how will they talk to me? These were the questions I asked myself as I set out on a brief trip to Pakistan last month.
