ISLAMABAD: **As Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf continues to ramp up pressure, Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) -led government has decided to add 2,600 megawatt (MW) of electricity to the national grid through gas-based power projects to placate the public before the next summer.

The power load-shedding and high electricity prices have been a major concern for the masses, which are still facing worst power crisis despite decrease in demand due to diversion of gas from power plants to powerful lobbies of the textile industry.

Under the agreements, the textile units are supposed to get gas for nine months but now they are getting gas supply for the entire year due to the intervention of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

However, sources in Ministry of Water and Power said Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCE), in its November 21 meeting held under the chairmanship of the PM, gave the nod to gas-based projects for adding 2,600 MW of energy to the system by April 15, 2015.

According to sources, the prime minister was informed that the additional 2,600 MW electricity will be produced through 325mmcfd LNG allocations, on-site power generation through raw gas and short-term LNG power projects. It was also decided that the excess LNG would be given to the CNG industry.

It was also proposed that 3,600 MW be generated by use of 600mmcfd LNG as permanent solution. Under this programme, six power plants with capacity of 600MW each will be installed. After completion of the programme, it will become possible to overcome the energy woes of the country.

Sources said the PM is also actively pursuing Clean Affordable Reliable Energy (CARE) programme, which will add 2,600 MW of power to the existing system, which currently has a generation capacity of 21,000 MW.

During the meeting, the premier was told that after their completion, CARE programme, Nandipur, Guddu and Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park power projects will add 28% additional power to the national grid and load shedding will reduce significantly.

The CCE was told that negotiations were underway with Chinese investors to set up coal-based power plants in the country. The meeting was further informed that Chinese leadership had conveyed the importance of completion of power projects by 2017.

The prime minister advised to take up the issues of power projects with Chinese counterpart very carefully. He emphasised that every effort must be made not to disappoint the Chinese, whose biggest concern was the security of their manpower in Pakistan.

The PM also categorically directed to complete energy projects on fast track basis by overcoming all impediments.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

Inshallah this will happen. We really need to sort out our energy situation asap.

Anybody know how many hours of load shedding we have these days?

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

In Lahore , average 5 to 6 hrs in my locality

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

5 to 6 hours is a lot for the winter when the demand is low, but then again our generation is also low due to a lack of water from our hydro-electrical dams.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

PMLN government is taking positive initiative unlike PPP led government.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

As expected from Nawaz, keep up the good work. I hope Imran khan doesn't disrupt these projects, let's hope his DJ at his darna has the latest songs remixed for him.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

And then some people wonder why PML-N is the most popular party in the country. It's because they actually try to fix the country's problems.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

^ most popular? :hehe:

The energy gap will NEVER be solved unless the govt grows kahoonas and collects bills from everyone.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

It won't happen someone wanna bet:) I am sure about it. But it will happen before summer 2016 that's for sure.

Re: Plan to add 2,600MW to grid before summer

Not sure who is telling the truth. However it is tradition of new government to take credit of what previous government started and blame its drawbacks/fups to previous government. (The typical Paki mentality) However one big project signed by Zardari with Iran has taken a back seat because of wrath of God.

PMLN taking credit of power projects started by PPP – by Naveed Javed

Nawaz Sharif, the cunning b@st@rd is habitual of taking credits of the projects initiated by his competitors. The thought came to mind when I learned some PMLN activists ranting about their bla bla governance and capabilities on the inauguration of 84MW hydropower project near Mangla Dam in Azad Kashmir!

To tell you about this particular project, the project was initiated by previous government of PPP. It is completed at a cost of $215 million in 40 months and will produce 84 megawatts of electricity, which will be added to the national grid through a 132 kV transmission line. ADB, IDB, IFC, HBL and NBP provided financial assistance for the project. Its sponsors include Hub Power Company, Pan Asian Investment Limited and Continental Energy Limited.

Nawaz Sharif while speaking in the induction ceremony said that it was a matter of great pleasure and privilege for him to inaugurate the first-ever hydro project constructed by the private sector in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. But he bald-facedly DISREMEMBERED to mention that this project, like many other projects which he will be inaugurating in his tenure, was started by previous government of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is not the first time when Nawaz Sharif is trying to claim the recognition of such developmental projects. Nawaz Sharif and PMLN are habitual of doing this, amusing thing here is that major developmental projects that come under the ‘winning’ (whining) belt of PMLN in past were either started or completed by PPP government. Pakistan’s Nuclear program is just one example of such projects. Concluding my thoughts, I urge everyone not be fooled again by the cheap whoopla of PMLN Government. This 84MW hydropower project near Mangla Dam in Azad Kashmir is a gift of Pakistan Peoples Party to our friends in Azad Jamu and Kashmir, it will not only improve electricity generation and supply but will also open new panoramas of progress in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
This shows political and moral corruption of Nawaz Sharif that within two months they try to take away credit as much as possible from the PPP. Also, the payments of Rs 300 billion to IPPs especially more than Rs 45 billion to power plants owned by Mian Mansha may show the complicity of these businessmen who created deliberate power shortages to get Nawaz to perform better in polls.
