Pity or Empathy

Whats the difference?

To me, pity is a judgement.
Empathy is an understanding.

How can you tell the difference between the two? how do you who is understanding and who is judging?

Re: Pity or Empathy

Empathy is the ability to see the problem from that persons point of view. Pity is saying i am so sorry but not understanding the problem or why it is a problem. Understanding is the key.

Re: Pity or Empathy

i wouldnt say pity is necessarily a judgemnt. Sometimes its hard for us to relate to the ones we love and adore, or people in general with their problems, and its even harder to not be able to help them.

Re: Pity or Empathy

i suppose devi...but i dont know..lately, iv been recieveing more pity than empathy...when i dnt even want to recieve anything.

I think these days it hard to find anyone who will not automatically pity...people lack the understanding part as they may feel that in order to understand something they need to experience it, therefor, pity is the easy option.

Re: Pity or Empathy

Peopel might not realize that its not pity that u want, or maybe they do not even realzie themselves that they r showering away with pity than simple understanding. It might just be there way of being there for u, without knowing the proper way to go about it.

p.s
I understand (not really) but I really do hope whatever it is, hope u get whatever is best and destined for u.

Re: Pity or Empathy

the diff to me would be intent

Re: Pity or Empathy

Re: Pity or Empathy

The difference is in how it makes you feel.
Pity makes you feel sorry for yourself. Sometimes angry. Sometimes helpless. Often depressed.
Empathy makes you feel understood, like a human being, at peace with yourself. It's somewhere you can start thinking of what comes next, positively.

Re: Pity or Empathy

Absolutely right.

Re: Pity or Empathy

This is what im talking about! You made sense.

I guess in some ways if we recieve too much pity and then we tend to act a certain way in order to justify the pity..if that makes sense…as in, if your told something day in day out, you begin to believe it.
