Pitch Doctoring ??

Waugh blasts Pakistan pitch-doctoring talk
Michael Donaldson - 2 October 2002

COLOMBO - Steve Waugh lashed out at Pakistan counterpart Waqar Younis’ pitch-doctoring talk on the eve of the three Test series starting in Colombo tomorrow.

Pakistan brought its own staff to supervise preparation of the pitch for the first Test, which is being played at a neutral venue after Australia declined to tour Pakistan for security fears.

And Waqar’s comment suggested his team hoped to enjoy the advantage of Pakistan-style conditions at Colombo Oval, the oldest ground in Sri Lanka, in what’s officially a home series.

“We’ve got our management here preparing the wicket so hopefully they’ll prepare a wicket that suits us,” Waqar told a press conference.

The remark stunned Australian captain Waugh who suggested some action should be taken against the Pakistan skipper.

“I think it’s a little bit strange when the captain’s made these comments and nothing’s said about it,” Waugh said.

“I know if I said that it would raise a few eyebrows and create a few headlines.”

Home teams in cricket - like host nations in Davis Cup tennis - invariably get conditions to suit themselves but often that’s a product of the soil conditions and climate.

For a side to go out of its way to prepare a surface which favoured it was abhorrent to Waugh.

"I don’t agree with it. I think you should play cricket on the best possible pitch.

“I’ve never, ever asked for a pitch to suit us and I don’t know any Australian in my time who’s done that and I don’t see why it should be done overseas.”

Waugh rejected the notion of unspoken acceptance that the home side gets what it wants.

"If it is, it’s wrong because you’re supposed to play Test cricket on the best pitch available.

“If they’re going to make pitches to suit the home team then the opposition should have a choice of what to do at the toss.”

Waqar’s comments implied Pakistan wanted a spin-friendly deck - especially after it saw Australia’s struggles against spin in India last year and again in the Champions Trophy semifinal against Sri Lanka here.

Waugh said an ideal Test wicket would suit fast bowling early then flatten out to a good batting strip before taking spin and creating low bounce on the last day.

“That way everyone gets an opportunity. Test cricket is about giving everyone a chance to do well at that level rather than one certain type of player.” **

Pitch doctoring??

I didn’t know such thing even exist in cricket.
How can ICC allow that to happen.
I think its cheating.
Preparing pitch to give your side more advantage, I know in past times the “supposedly” home teams were favored by the pitch just because it was their home but I didn’t know it can be specially done just to favor the home team.

Why does Waugh have to worry, its not like he doesn’t have a quality spinner in his side, he has Warne so it preety evens it out but I still think its unfair to the Australians, it doesn’t matter how good they are but all teams should be treated fairly.

Umair...
its perfectly fine home team playing on pitches suited to them..
you remember Pk beating Aussies in sydney some years in 96?
Aussies didnt give us a test match in sydney in 99-2000....coz sydeny is a spinning wicket...
and its not Pitch Doctoring, its just the bad name given by -oh-s-honest Mr.Waugh. Sholdnt we prpeare spiinng wickets when we struggle on bouncy wickets? Aussies are used to play in bouncy wickets like perth.

i hope u r satisfied

No Umair.Your comment is not fair. Traditionaly home sides are allowed to prepare the pitch they way they think is gonna be of advantage to them.Obviously if AUS is playing India in calcutta ,India will not offer a Green top at Eden garden.Rather if there is a grass it will be cut before the match. This is what always happens.Australian dont give turning wicket to us.
In this case, since this is being treated as home ground for Pakistan WAQAR has all the right to call shorts till the match starts. If he does after the Toss then it will be called doctoring.

Steve Waugh is just trying to mess with WAQAR's brain. This is typical Australian off the field game which takes place in all series.

I'm not saying the pitch should be prepared so it ca favor the visitors, it should be leaved in its natural shaped. Not to be messed with.

Well it doesnt hapen that way.Its a tradition and host team has privilage of making the pitch they way they think is good .So in this case Pakistan being the host can do whatver they feel. Steve waugh should stop cribbing and he should not call it doctoring of pitch.

What is Steve cribbing about ? He also has a World Class Spinner in the Team - Why is he scared ??

I hope it is not part of his Mental Disintegration theory. Last time they tried with - They were disintegrated by Sri Lanka and India.

I just hope Pakistani Youngsters kick them where it hurts most. Aa jaate hain kahan kahan se best ever side ban ne ke liye.

Typical Australian. Instead of being angry on his comments i love they way Australian's normally try to ousted and upset the opponent specially their captain. They did the same thing with Ganguly and Naseer Hussain and we should expect the same for future. Instead of calling them name everyteam should be mentaly strong enough to reply on and off the ground because cricket is not played on ground ONLY anymore.

Regarding pitches ofcourse its home team's right to ask the management and grounds men to prepare pitches to favor them there can be no 2 options about this.

the indians always always make spinning pitches for their visitors

So, what is wrong with it ?? South Africa won on the same pitches, so did Pakistan, Andy Flower scored more runs than the Indian batsmen in last series. Even the Aussie won the first test on a spinning track.

My point is, no matter who is playing at home, the pitch should be leaved it as it is.
You already have the conditions and crowd supporting in general then whats the use.
I have never heard of anything like this.

what do you mean by "leave it as it is"..
Pitch needs to be build and maintained after every few matches.Otheriwse it will be like a kabaddi ground.

Every country prepares pitches according to their needs. For example in West Indies in the 80's they had very fast and bouncey pitches. To call it pitch doctoring is just whinning on part of Steve Waugh.
