Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

Hi all:wave:
Has anyone suffered a trapped or pinched nerve in their leg?:hmmm:.. I believe this is also called sciatia??..It usually starts in the lower back and is irritation of the sciatic nerve that stems in the lumbar and down. Would anyone know how to treat it ???..Much appreciated:)

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

Haven't heard of it :(

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

Yeah.. my Husband got this.. i don't think there is any one treatment for this.. but more of a lifestyle change. A doctor/physiotherapist can prescribe drugs to heal the swelling of muscles around the sciatic nerve in the lower back. Otherwise there are exercises for this. But definately go to a doctor, it can also lead to no control of the bowels, or can be an indication of some other problem.

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

I am a doctor so what i do is check the spine for areas of tenderness. Tests for sensation, coordination, muscle strength, and certain muscle reflexes may be tested, especially when slipped disc is suspected. Medical professional may use the straight-leg-raise test (lifting the leg to an angle of more than 60 degrees) to help locate where the pain is at.

Depends on severity of your case, other tests may include an X-ray, or scans like CT or CAT or MRI.
And depends on your test and all the scans (if the severity is maximum) than other treatments for sciatica include medications to relieve pain and inflammation and relax muscles, and physical therapy.

Go and consult your physician and see what he/she says. Good luck!

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

I had it about a month back but mine was due to pregnancy. It went away on it's own. I think what helped me was stretching the leg etc. Hope you feel better.

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

Hey DR H!.. Wow! Thank you soo much for giving me that info- do you think its a test I can ask for when I see the doctor or would the doc do it regardless as Ive described the problem?..it seems the sciatica has travelled to the foot and heel…i know massages have help but after speaking to meany- they do say the pain tends to come and then disappear.. anyway I really appreciate the information- thank you

Yes S, my pregnant friend tells me she only develops this condition when she carries- inshalalah hope ur feeling great and I think the gym has helped- walking on the treadmill.. thanks for ur advise!:k:

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

I had this too due to a slipped disc and mine was so severe that I had to have surgery. Alhumdulillah , I was fine after that.

Less severe cases can be helped by physical therapy.

Sounds like your Sciatic nerves were effected. Don't know about the exact root cause your own physican might be able to tell you in detail but idealy, if you need to reduce your sciatica pain you take over the counter medication. Or to help reduce inflammation and pain you use Advil and Aleve are brand name examples of NSAIDs. And yes, massages do help but for short term as you can tell. Try doing sciatic exercises. Ask your chiro or physiotherapist..he/she will tell you about these exercises. And you are welcome!

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

**Dr H ur a star !!!.. Thank you soo much for your personal consultatation!!!:cb:… To be honest I avoid doctors at all costs as Im from the old school… “just grin it and bear it”.. I must say this has some truth as Ive been excercising - walking / brisk walking on a the treadmill along with some gentle stretching and alot of massages and this seems to have given some comfort.. my sciatia is now located at the feet and top part of the foot and so im hoping in a while the whole condition will just go inshallah! Thanks very very much Doc for the very useful tips and May Allah swt bless uuu!!!

Cheers x**

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

I had this for long time and tried taking many medications and shots for pain and muscle relaxation but nothing worked so I had to go through physical therapy. I still get it sometimes but not quiet as severe as it was before. I try to keep up with my exercise and correct posture and sometimes I slip and it comes back.

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

physical therepy....some people take shots...and some get surgery...it all depends on what ur doc/specialist says..so just do yourself a favor and make an appointment for it

Re: Pinched nerve/ trapped nerve?

Thanks Uahmed - u too are very rite…hopefully surgery is the last resort and so far - it seems like excercise and some physio seemed to have worked!:k: Thanks x
