It's pretty common. I think I first heard it when I was rather young. Some aunties at a wedding were looking for rishtas. I was 12 I believe. They were sitting in the row behind me and picking out random girls and then proceeded to reject one because of her piercing..! Anyway, I ended up asking my friends and they said it was true. Turns out, even today, people believe the same thing.

Yes, it is ridiculous. Reason I got it changed was because I will be going to Pakistan to get all the wedding shopping only a few weeks ahead of time. So I will be buying a ready-made nath. I won't have time to get one made and so I had to change it.

PS: I have no problems standing up against what I believe is wrong.
