i definitely agree there's a difference between designer wear and non-designer wear ..on average. this is not to say that there are good darzis and bad designers out there in which case the former is obviously going to prove a better choice but on average the thing with designers (again assuming its a good designer) is that they have a more broad sense of fashion, cut, style, color, kaam and fitting. A good kaam wala may be highly specialized in one aspect e.g. he may do a fantastic job with the kaam. similarly, a good darzi may give you a great fit. However, a designer who went to fashion school will have an idea of how the whole dress will come together, which colors will complement the kaam, what cloth will work with the kaam, how the dress should fit and flow etc. They might also know these good kaam walay and good darzis and essentially they are making them all come together. Designers also have a better sense of trends.
