I am certainly not surprised. :)

I think he should have just received his award and move off the stage. There was absolutely no need of such anti-war talk since you are in a different environment.
...] He just wanted to let everyone know that regardless of why we are here there is surely something more important than this going on in world, which happens to be totally inhuman. So this was indeed very brave of Moore to speak up and not caring where he was and of the implications that could harm his status among his colleagues.

i think it was a great idea of his to invite all his fellow nominees up on the stage - i think they may have pre-planned it (maybe they decided that whoever wins the Oscar, would invite fellow nominees up on the stage); they were ALL wearing peace signs and it made a nice symbolic picture of the entire group adorning peace signs, standing up on the stage.
Whatever one's opinions on his perspectives - he has guts, that's for sure. Not many people would have the courage to state all that infront of the Hollywood crowd, let alone infront of the millions of people who watched him via tv. Most importantly, perhaps, he raised the issue of the illegal invasion against Iraq in an environment where people probably feel very uncomfortable discussing it - he has the satisfaction of knowing that he is not scared of standing up for what he believes in. A rare trait these days i find.

I just find him to be something of a charlatan when it comes to his films. He is grandstander and showed it during the Oscars.

A "charlatan"?
i enjoyed Bowling for Columbine; i thought it was quite well produced and for me personally - very very informative. i don't think he was grandstanding at all last night. But i realize we all have our own personal opinions :)

Especially when its very easy for "Anti-War" being painted as "Anti-American" or "Pro-Saddam".

I wasn't even sure I was using it correctly, but I checked and it seems appropriate.
charlatan
n : a flamboyant deceiver; one who attracts customers with tricks or jokes
I did not see Bowling for Columbine, so I can't comment on it directly. But I saw Roger and Me years ago a couple of times and really enjoyed it. And he had a TV show called TV Nation a few years back. I think of him more as a big, cuddly leftwing version of a shock-jock on radio. Taking a popular and controversial issue and exploiting it. Mind you, I totally agree on the gun issue in the U.S., but Moore doesn't actually "document" any real events. He editorializes with scripted scenarios and situations designed to nab someone in the act of committing hypocrisy or he will leave viewrs to linger on his message after posing some loaded, rhetorical question.
He wants to have viewers exclaim in their own heads, "Exactly!" or "That's so true!"-all legitimate goals for a filmmaker. But this should not be construed as representing "the truth of the matter" so to speak. I find that troubling. So many educated people I know, e-mailing his thoughts around as if he spoke with such clarity. He the issues he deals with pander to his audience and the agenda is pretty balck and white. I enjoy work that has a bit more ambiguity for the viewer, particulary in terms of documentary.
If I were to play dimestore psychologist, I could tell you that some of his hatred for "the man" is likely rooted in his own self-loathing. White guilt (Stupid White Men), he is overweight and not very unattractive with all its negative implications on relationships with women, he has naturally taken the persona of underdog and is fighting back. He wants attention. This can perhaps partially explain his behavior.
I think there is a lot of legitamacy to his work and my two-bit psychoanalysis is perhaps a small part of his discontent. He certainly has purveyed a strong and successful message. And it's entertaining. But folks, please, he is no genius, no defender of the real truth. He is partially just Michael Moore, a guy shouting to be heard.

You are right about the use of the word, Storch. It was my mistake; i was not certain what ‘charlatan’ meant. My mistake, you are right. Sorry.
>>I did not see Bowling for Columbine, so I can’t comment on it directly.<<
Please do me a favour and rent it this weekend
If you hate it, then you can come back in this thread and curse me out if you want. If one has not seen it yet, then certainly that prevents one from discussing it constructively, no ?

Isn’t this a bit of a stretch ? How can you analyze the guy in such a detailed manner, without even having met him even once ? Based upon what - a documentary that he has produced ?
Are you implying that all overweight and unattractive guys have relationship problems with women ? 'Cos i know plenty of very good-looking guys who have absolutely no idea how to hold a decent conversation with a girl, either.
>>He is partially just Michael Moore, a guy shouting to be heard.<<
And doing a pretty good darn job at it, too, i must say - after winning all these awards. Aren’t we all just shouting to be heard in our own ways, particularly on this Forum.
MIchael Moore is a pinko commie twit. He doesn't understand the conept of globalization. Railing against Hormel and GM about outsourcing jobs to china and Mexico and then finding out that profitablity in those companies went up along with shareholder value made him look really stupid. Now he is making a bigger fool of himself by going against the will of the american people, he will get outsourced to Cuba or Afghanistan real soon.
In fact he might be a candiate ripe for a muslim conversion. He believes in anachronistic economic systems and thinks Utopian socialism is in line with man's composition. :)
…pinko commie twit…
Itna ghussa? Sab kharyat?
He’s going “against the will of the American people”, but Bush is going against the will of the entire world. hmmm now which one is more significant in terms of repercussions around the world ![]()

That is the truth, no doubt. I will plead a big guilty to that. Regarding the psychoanalysis, I was just taking a shot at him, 'cause I think he sort of deserves it. I will certainly rent this movie. I like his work, I just think he's kinda slippery.

You are not alone, so will i. ![]()
Yes if you are able to, do rent it out and let me know afterwards what you make of it.
