To the latest news - European Union has asked PIA to purchase new aircrafts, there is no way they will allow A300/A310 Airbuses anymore. The safety certificate for 747-300 that was earlier given until 2008 to PIA is being cancelled too. PIA is taking the matter to ICJ, lets see what happens there - another way to waste millions in lawyers & court fees now.

The problem begins with the political parties that when they are in power induct hundreds (actually thousands) of their incompetent favourites (as if PIA were their personal fiefdom) into the regular service of the airline.

TRD has a point, whatever badmaashi the previous croos had done, the responsibility to reverse that and fix the mess rests with the current govt. It looks like they failed.
either they should just let the airline go private and let it live and die by its own results, or if govt is going to have a stake in it, they need to run it properly.
They did consider the A-340. Infact Airbus lobbied pretty hard for PIA to get the A-340, but PIA went for the 777 instead due to EXIM bank credit and supposed 'other reasons' (rumors of US pressure). Like I said before, there is some cotroversy in connection with the A-380 as some airlines have cancelled thier orders so it is debatable if it would have been suitable for PIA even it had been Auwaat key andar.
Bhaee - 360 doesn't exsit :) - I was just taking the mickey out on that picture though.
340-600 is the latest one, or 380. A380 "PIA kee auqaat say bahir hay" so realistically they should consider 340s.
this definitely isn't because of PIA is cutting corners trying to reduce cost. PIA still has the most number of employees per operational plane. the average around the world is 200 whereas PIA operates around double that number. bad management and incompetence finally caught up with PIA.
what a turn around.. all throughout 70s and even early 80s it used to be a pretty decent airline.
They should also ban Air India. Its planes are nothing but flying buses. Aur to aur airhostesses phirangiyon ko dekh kar batteesee phadti hain aur fellow Indians ko ghoorti hain. (Saala Indian foreign travel kar raha hai).
Other day I saw one landing at Frankfurt airport. Dhum se land hua aur uske peeche se dhuan nikal raha tha kisi diesel truck ki tarah.
Air India and indian are very costly, but their services are good.
I don't really like these low cost airlines like Air Deccan and SpiceJet- not great hospitality. It's just the low cost that attracts passengers.(i travelled from Delhi to bangalore in Air Deccan at just Rs.1200!)
But if these state run airliners have to survive in India's aviation sector, they really gotta modernise and reduce prices.
Air India is crap, like PIA suffers from the same disease. However they at least maintain their planes.
PIA used to be THE BEST airline from Asia. All that has happened is got over bloated, stupid management and dinosaurs are not being removed. Using UK/EU routes as cash cows and the rest is not so profitable. The service from UK has been crap for the last 10 years. However because of the limited capacity they have managed to fill the planes up. Many more people travel via the Gulf now to bypass PIA however it does add hassle over a direct flight. If their was some competition i.e. Virgin decided let's do the UK to PK route with the same concept as transatlantic flights PIA would go bust simple as that. Suprised they have lasted so long.
Agreed!!
I won't mind at all if any airlines flight is cancelled due to safety reasons. I asked you because the flight from Houston to LHr and vice versa was quite a popular and easy route for ex Pakistanis living in Texas. So I thought you might have an insight on it.
Umer579,
Let me ask you this if you don't mind. Why are you asking this question from me? If the flight was cancelled on safety grounds then there is no argument what so ever. I say good job.
Very well said and Agreed 100%.
If we can get rid of the red tape in PIA, it's going to be a rocking airlines again just like it used to be in the late 60s and 70s. It won't be a bad idea to privatise PIA since the privatisation will atleast bring some check and balance system in our national carrier. Just an idea!!

PIA is only surviving because CAA has closed most of other flights operators to Pakistan by increasing the landing fee to $6000 for EU/USA based countries. Landing fee for Dubai is $3500 for everyone. [This landing fee infomation is from last year, may have changed now]. The reason they did it because they wanted PIA routes to Europe fying full. There is no KLM, Swissair etc etc flights to Pakistan anymore, result - BAN on dilapidating PIA FLEET. PIA earned loads of profit but over economcy was lost because by increasing the flights from other operators would have given money to the CAA (directly to Government).
This is Government's useless policies & PIA's corruption that is now resulting as serious problem. PIA is not facing any competition, more than 90% of PIA passengers are Pakistanis (dont look at their passports, look at their faces). If there is no competition - how can they improve, the improvement they are talking about in media about improvement - that is to remove the dust from aircraft doors.
I'd love to see Virgin Atlantic or KLM or Swissair going to Pakistan, at least Karachi / ISB / Lahore, but that may not happen in my life time (lets say in next 40 years). The conclusion of all this, Corruption is in our blood, not matter what - it wont easily go.
yup. I dont know the CAA costs but answers why we don't see other airlines making use of direct flights to Pakistan even thought there is never enough capacity.
It's small short terms gains over a well thought out policy. I think Pakistan could really do with privatisation. Cant see this disease being eradicated. Far too over staffed on my last visit.J ust asking for ID for the sake of it, otherwise it looked as though the do nothing.
Look at the bright side, when and if PIA goes under - one of us can pick up their newly renovated offices off the auction block.
What disturbs me is how incompetent the media in Pakistan is. Instead of blaming an aging fleet and bad management, many news stations are hinting Europe banned our planes because we didnt buy Airbuses. EU saying we need to buy new planes = pressuring us into buying Airbus? As if Europe is punishing us for ordering Boeing. Common!

No - They are not punishing & they are not forcing PIA to buy airbuses. They are telling PIA to replace A300 & A310 because all of them are more than 23 years old. 747 That PIA is running are more than 25 years old (most of them). Their flight life is technically over & PIA had them refurbished by manufacturers. EU didn't accept refurbishments, they are asking, replace not refurbish.
In my opinion airbus 340s are better choice over boeing 777 when it comes to cost & maintenance & thats what others are saying here, not EU officials.

Typical attitude amongst Pakistanis, and Muslim countries in general, to blame others for their own failings
