KARACHI: PIA and Boeing announced a firm order for five 777-300ER (extended range) airplanes valued at nearly $1.5 billion at list prices on Monday.

A press release issued by PIA stated that the order also includes purchase rights to PIA for five additional 777-300ER. Based in Karachi, PIA has been renewing its long-haul fleet to accommodate an increased demand for air travel as well as to introduce new routes, the release said.

“With passenger traffic in our region accelerating, the new 777-300ER airplanes will continue to deliver the highest standards of technology and passenger comfort to our customers,” said PIA’s managing director Capt. Nadeem Yousufzai.

“The spacious 777-300ER has been an integral part of our long-range fleet renewal programme and its excellent operating economics, long range capability and reliability will allow us to expand into new long-haul markets,” he added.

“We are proud that Pakistan International Airlines is a special Boeing customer that continues to invest and trust in the industry-leading capabilities of the 777 family of airplanes,” said Boeing’s VP Sales (ME, Russia and Central Asia) Marty Bentrott.

He said Boeing values the excellent partnership that was established over 10 years ago and one which we hope to continue well into the future as the airline progresses with its expansion plans.

Boeing’s director international sales Miguel Santos said the 777-300ER will generate more revenue and carry additional payload, while extending range capability.

With this order, the national carrier’s Boeing 777 fleet will grow to 14, including three 777-200ERs, two 777-200LRs and eight 777-300ERs. Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

That was exactly what I was thinking while opening the thread. PIA and the government both are broke...

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

PIA is listed as having perhaps the highest employee to aircraft ratio in the world (around 450 employees to 1 plane). Our beloved PPP has restored the 1000s of deadbeat no-show employees to the airline. On the plus side, this acquisition of new aircraft will reduce the employee to plane ratio, so we are moving in the right direction!

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

^^^ What exactly are 450 people doing to a plane?

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

u really don't wanna know that!!!!

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

These folks are a gift to the national exchequer from Benazir, who made thousands of political appointments to national organizations like PIA, Railways, State Life, to name a few. Though these appointments were cancelled by the subsequent PML-N government in 1997, you will be pleased to know that team Zardari not only restored all those appointees, but also gave them back-pay for the past 12 years!
Obviously PIA has gotten these new aircraft financed, which will no doubt throw the airline into further debt and troubles. Good luck to them.

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

PIA is making a loss of around Rs3 million every hour. Gilani government reinstated thousands of employees sacked earlier and crippled the organization beyond repair. Despite all the staggering losses that the national carrier incurs, neither the government nor PIA itself seem to have any strategy to steer the firm out of financial 'air pockets'.

It will be almost impossible for anyone to match up to the performance standards this government has set. Only another PPP government can do that!

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

Silly post.

Don't you know how many thousands were appointed in Mush's time?

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

Lets see how long these last. I so wish I were around when people were actually proud of "PIA."

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

Silly post.

Are you trying to defend Zardari's political appointments?

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

As much as I dislike Musharraf, the appointments were not nearly as staggering as those made by Benazir. She did a great job ripping off the national exchequer, something her husband and co have continued in this government.

I know of folks who took leaves of absence from their jobs, just to go back to these rip-off appointments, spend the required minimum time, collect the back pay, and 'resign' and go back to their regular jobs.

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

LOL, my brother is a PIA engineer, and has been for last 20 years.

I know through him, and other friends in PIA what you are saying is 100% wrong.

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

Oh yes, PIA was as bankrupt as in this time as it was under musharraf. I think Pakistan Steel was bankrupt as well, hence the intervention by the chief justice.

LOL indeed jiyalas LOL LOL LOL

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

I assume your brother is a PPP loyalist, much like yourself. Hard to expect impartiality from him. You are trying hard to mask the mess that Benazir made. A lot of people have tried to cover her messes up, just because shes passed on, but the fact remains that PIA is in trouble now because of excess employees, who are raking in salaries and benefits, and in most cases, not even showing up for work. (Not sure what difference that would make, as most, if not all of them dont know their jobs anyway.) The sole qualification required to be recruited under PPP is to be a jiyala.

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

Remember earlier this month PIA signed a deal with Airbus for the Transfer of ownership of six A310 planes which were acquired by the airline on lease in mid 2000s.

I am not sure what are we doing here. Most of the airlines for the sake of saving money etc always buy either Boeing or Airbus while PIA has struck a deal with both within a month :smack:

Re: PIA orders five new Boeing 777-300ER for $1.5 billion

One of my friend's dad who is filthy rich and owned successful business overseas (can't disclose info), he sold everything and went back to Pakistan back in 07/08 because he was sure that he could make ten times more money in Pakistan than he was making overseas running a million dollar business. His Business in Pakistan was "politics" and he was promised a position by none other than Benazir Bhutto.
His family is still overseas and expect dad to bring millions of dollars when PPP tenure is over :)
