I have zero sympathy for PIA. I used PIA for decades. I used to buy their expensive tickets even when cheaper tickets of far more reputed airlines were available. I even used to encourage people here on GS to ignore the negatives of PIA and offered them workarounds. I was doing that despite having had bad experiences with PIA. But in 2021 I had such a bad experience with PIA that now I couldn't even trust a glass of water given to me by a PIA employee.

Agreed. An airline which helped started Emirates Airline not a long time ago, became one of the world famous and profitable airlines. PIA had best pilots, the national airline on purpose was failed to promote private airlines. People who have failed PIA are none but those who have failed the country enjoying absolute power most of the times since 1947. It is high time that PIA should be handed over to Qatar Airways or to Chinese to run the PIA without interference of military, bureaucracy or politicians. Zero tolerance for giving free tickets. And yes change the name such as Indus Valley Airline or IVA

These gentlemen just pin pointed why PIA failed. I found 4 reasons:

Retd. Air Marshal Noor Khan when Chairman PIA made decisions according to his egoistic brain or may be for getting huge commissions. When he was presented proposal for purchasing Boeing 727 the most successful aircraft of the time, by 3 directors, he threw the proposal in the garbage and ordered Tridents which could not run profitably and ultimately sold to China.

Former MD Haroon Aijaz proposed profitable extension of PIA by collaborating with Turkish Airlines making Istanbul and Karachi as hub, the PIA union opposed it some pilots could not go to NY where there children were living. Since he was also friend of Asif Ali Zardari, the relation went against his honest working and in the interest of PIA.

I believe that PIA is being devalued so it is sold cheaply to some private investor later. There was even a proposal to perhaps open a smaller domestic carrier but PIA would have to be auctioned off first. Pakistan has never properly opened up its tourism industry even when times were peaceful and Pakistani don’t travel a lot by air like in America to warrant a domestic airline. Army is blocking off all sorts of areas in Pakistan on the basis of “national security”. PIA union is a story of corrupt individuals being inducted many times on ‘quota system’ just like we have ghost schools and ghost custom inspectors in Pakistan.
My sister was herself offered a good teaching position only if she paid off the interviewer some thousands of rupees. My sister first didn’t believe it and then left once she urnderstood the nature of the bribe. Corruption is a big part of why America has started to go downhill but at least America had a good run and still has a big lead over China unlike Pakistan that never took off.
Do you have any official reference on that issue, particularly the ethnicity of union members? I am sure 90% you will find Punjabi and Pukhtoon, is that you want to say? However there are more than 2 hours of video by ex experts of PIA who knew what caused the down fall of PIA. Watch thoroughly and listen what they are saying then you should input your wisdom

I know ZAB still creates a lot of pain in the asses of so many pakis, but unfortunately PIA was formed by the government of Pakistan in 1955, long before even he was appointed as Foreign Minister in the government of Ayub Khan. Read history how it was started. How was PIA formed?
