I’ve seen the movie (Bandit Queen). So if the book is anywhere close to the movie, then it would be seem like an unending rape sequence, punctuated with a lot of swear words. Frankly I wouldn’t suggest the book in that case (I am assuming you’re under 21

). But it might give a good insight on the caste politics (and violence) in that part of India. Even today caste plays an important part in their politics.

Bombaykid, not to offend you but even if she is under 21 it really doesn't matter cause nowadays minors see a lot of stuff that they are not suppose to on TV (not cable) and around them. Kids today are preexposed to stuff that they are not suppose to be watching so it really doesn't matter if she watched or the movie or reade it. In my opinion she would only learn how cruel a society can be to a miserable woman!

Relax Neera…I was just teasing her

As always I think movies are a poorer and more sweeping shadow of the actual book…

Books are always better - more in depth - more serious..

It’s sad and by god - it made me cry a few tears..

If you haven’t read it and are a bit interested then get it - it’s a big novel but worth the read…

…lol. u tell’em sista!

Seen the movie
Read the book

just cause i admire the woman's courage

I would have to here change my opinion
usually i say books are much better then the movies based on them
but here the movie was much better then the book

The book failed to convey what the movie so graphically displayed
and all of it was true

BombayKid true the movie has rape scenes and filthy language
wht else did you expect
flowers and candy for a woman who stood up to unjust and corrupt system
who paid the price for not accepting the so called 'larki syndrome'
i loved the part where she goes back and beats up her 'first husband'

The most moving part was when her and her lover are in the mountains, in a cave
she is in love with him however her love is overshadowed by her hatred for men
she wants to hold him and love him but her past experiences and encounters with men make her deny the love which she was now being blessed with

Can someone give a quick synopsis of Phoolan Devi? I get some idea of it from what Anchal wrote, but I want more!
