Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Has anyone tried that?

There is a Broadband Phone company called Vonage who are offering excellent flat rates for unlimited domestic / canada calls and very low international per minute rates. Calls to UK are only $0.3 and to Pakistan $0.25 per minute (including tax) with no connection charges. They have all other regular phone line features and more.

I would like to get one…any reviews?

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

I use Vonage. It's great.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

VOIP

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

I got Vonage too. Much cheaper than verizon et al. Voice quality is the same. The customer care hold times r outrageously high. Hada bit of trouble when we were setting up the accounts and svc but after that its all been good.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Yeah, I know smartass. I didn’t want to use telecom terminology as it would have scared generalites.

Femme - oh, isi liyay u r talking over the phone non-stop.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Are you guys (current VOIP users) using Cable or DSL?

I'm afraid of getting it on DSL, as if I feel it may deteriorate the quality.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

I am???

Sadiyah I use cable.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

We use it and its very cheap to call Pak.

Last week tho, due to a storm, our router went dead -- took almost 5 days (b/c of indep. day) to get it replaced with the fone working again.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

So how is the quaility on long distance/international through cable?

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Sweetie I dont think I took you out on a date yet, so before you call me cheap be a good sport and use a gentler adjective to describe me. Thank you in anticipation over the edit.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Vonage is good. I am using it from last 7-8 month but if you are planning to use if quite frequently for Pakistan calling forget it. Voice quality is really bad and its hard to get connected.

As far as local, long distance, UK and Canda calling is concerned you cant beat Vonage. You will never notice that you are talking on IP phone. you cant even beat the price (25$ unlimited plan with loaded features ). I still use calling card for Pakistan (sometime i do use vaonge too) but Vonage is still saving me some bucks.

PS: whenever (and if) you decide to get Vonage ask me to refer you so that we both can save one month service charges

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

I'm thinking of gettint it too..

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

then get reference URL from me

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

VOIP is so old school..i have my own video conference service which i engineered, and developed, runs on my own servers. in fact, i got nikkahfied on that service..beat that :D

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

Good for you that you “engineered” your own server. I personally dont believe in re-inventing the wheel and will buy the 25$ server when needed

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

I like that vonage commerical tune...

doot do dooot da doooo..

But I'm to cheap to actually subscribe to it.

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

FG, do check into the issue with 911...you know with these VOIP services they cannot locate you, not to mention if the power is out or that little dohicky they provide you goes bad, you are sol....so consider all the facts my brother...better yet, why are you still making the decisions, you just got married....she should decide :)

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

haha. That’s actually funny Verizon, but if I were talking about u it would have been something like…verizon is much cheaper than vonage et al. :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

i am using packet8 for 2 years now

they charge me $20 a month, I get all the features similar to vonage provides for $25.

plus their international rates are cheap, for example Pakistan is 0.24/min (it use to be 0.17/min, 2 months ago)

Re: Phone over DSL or Cable Internet

911 is a real issue, and the way the VOIP providers have (kinda) solved through help from their customers. Since a VOIP phone (e.g. Vonage) can be taken to any location or anywhere in the world, so, as a VOIP customer if you are in US and intend to use VOIP phone in one place (i.e. your home) you are requested to provide Vonage with your physical address. After that anytime you dial 9-1-1 from your Vonage phone, the call will get routed to the nearest 9-1-1 center. It will be a few extra seconds while the call is routed, but it will get there.

With many people using chordless phones at home for regular telephone service, power disruption is likely to sever even regular phone service, so Vonage is no different. However, if your cellphone is equipped with E911, you can still make emergency calls from it, and the phoneset will provide your location to the 9-1-1 provider.
