Philosophy of "Qurbai"

Stuck with the “ritual” of qurbai , have we forgotten about the spirit behind the sacrifice, or this ritual ,in essence, is all we have to follow?

Please share your belief of “qurbani”.

Re: Philosophy of "Qurbai"

Sacrifice the precious most thing in the way of your Lord with Love and dedication.

Very true, but why then why we have to sacrifice an animal?

There was once a time when people raised livestock animals ... then another time came when people kept livestock animals ... then there came a time when people avoided livestock animals unless they really had to - we are in those time today.

Animals are like our companions, vehicles and trading means and products all rolled into one. Or they should be.

Animal life is life it is a creature from Allah (SWT) entrusted to us to cater for the needs of it.

When we need them so much ... love them so much ... how can we part with them even if it is to eat from them? We can do so only through sacrifice ... we cut with tears flowing after teasing the animal away from others so they do not get disturbed, we offer it a drink, a wash and sharpen the knife so as to make the least affliction. We take it to the jugular a place of lowest sensory impact for the brain to allow the blood drain out with least pain. Much less than a shock of electricity pulsing through the body enough to knock out the animal or even kill it.

We acknowledge the sanctity of life ... or atleast we did once upon a time ...

Today we see no animal, just plastic bags filled with mixed meat pieces no emotion is felt except for ... glad I got that ritual out of the way ... or that butcher just conned me ...

O' just think of your children under the knife and shed a few tears on Qurbani to savour the sanctity of life !!!

Re: Philosophy of "Qurbai"

So in a way it appears to be a mere soul less ritual? Is it not an effort of echoing into an act of highest degree of moral worth, a manifestation that deserves eternal remembrance?

Re: Philosophy of "Qurbai"

There are two answers;

One in conformity of religion. Other against it.

First. Like it is mentioned, Qurbani is sacrifice of something dear to a person.

After nurturing an animal one sees animal losing its life. One has to feel loss of life in front of one's eyes and feels sorrow but content that everything one day has to go. The animal has gone to heaven or so on. That seems to be the spirit.

Another version is to feel if your own son was to be losing life for Allah what would you have felt. Very difficult to learn and even difficult to make others understand. Even though people send their kids to war on usual basis. Which has no guarentee of life. These parents feel sorrow and happiness at the same time.

Now the not so religious or even anti religious view.

One is: How can it always be a life to be taken for making God happy? Can God not be happy by someone growing one plant that day?

Second is: What kind of God will ask a man to take his son's life just for his pleasure? How come a man would agree to this based just on a dream? How come a son will say, Thats OK dad , just kill me. Make sure the knife is sharp enough so you son't have to work hard.

Why should one do it if one did not get a dream of sacrificing even a cow/goat.

One did not raise an animal how one is supposed to have the feelings of loss. All one think is how one is going to make Tikka/Kabab!

OK. I dragged it a bit but this kind of philosophy can be difficult for everyone to get.

If we follow the spirit of Ijtihad. Instead following sacrifice of animal we can donate the money to some deserving institute. In todays world money is the most loved community. And Allah has ask to secrifice that which is dear to you.

Without going into the details, I invite you to do some research or at least contemplate about the comparison of economic activity that Qurbani generates as oppose to the economic activity that donating equal amount of money would generate.

Peace Kinnare

Then the better thing to do is to cut the notes in half and throw them away.

Re: Philosophy of "Qurbai"

Intillphat, I am only suggesting. Shia have different Hadith book, and Sunni has different Hadith book. we can alway have discussion to solve the problem we can alway think how Prophet Muhammad would react in todays world.

I was suggesting a solution where money can be used toward betterment of Poor.

Peace Kinnare

That angle has already been covered in sadaqah and zakat ... You see Qurbani is a rasm of Eid/Hajj ... furthermore Qurbani is split in three portions, 1/3 of which you yourself should eat. As a celebration.

It is also a good way to curtail the population of goats/sheep and allows people in debt to eat some protein. Because if you give a person who is in debt some money his obligation is to first remove his debt before he does something with the money. When it comes to distributed meat the confines of the money rules do not apply.
