^ I completely agreed with everything you said - just wrote pretty much the same stuff from my own (female) point of view.
I suppose that's another thing too, there are many supervisors who are completely unwilling to take on students that, basically, have a life. They want them to be totally committed to their research and don't want to hear about any personal problems or commitments. In the interview they will do whatever they can to ascertain what kind of research student you will make, whether you're male or female.
