Phatak! Now my pc won't work

ok so i’m sitting down on my desk (my pc was off) i was working on my laptop.
Then i hear BOOM! (phatak) like a gunshot… i smell around for a burned wire or something.. but i get nothing at all… about 2 hours later i come back and turn on my pc and it won’t turn on. (the sound didn’t come from the back of the pc (pwr supply)…

now i dont know what to do… printers turning on. laptop (thank god) is workign fine and charging.. monitor is turning on… but not the pc.. they are all plugged into the same extention as everything else…

any ideas?

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

That's a good one. The PC was off when the gunshot happened. So I'd think that it would be effected. But then why isn't it on-ing! Did you open it up to see if anything was visible. Maybe a blackened area. Try replacing the powercord, or try plugging into a different outlet to see if that makes a difference.

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

I used a different power cable and powering on the pc and it won't... i opened it up.. no blackend areas.... i used that same power cable on the same outlet.. and it powered up the monitor... i have a dell optiplex and they are built for this particular model only... (pwr supply)

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won’t work

hmmmmmmmmmm… thats a good one .. :konfused:

i’ve heard power supplies blowing up.. they DO make a patakha sound … can u call their support# and investigate more..

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

90% chances that ur PC's power supply is gone, if not. Then look for some holes in the PC casing, you neighbour might have shot ur PC (joking).

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

ya after playing around with it alot , i figure it is the power supply... but now my question to u guyz is that if i open up that power supply is there a fuse or somethign i can replace myself? rather than buying a over priced power supply from dell? its not covered (didn't buy warranty) ... plus it takes a while to get here - and i'm looking for a quick fix

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

Take the power supply to nearest computer H/W store & get a new one (it doesn't have to be dell), just make sure that the new one u buy has some kind of warrenty on it (few months to couple of years).

I doubt that u can change any fuse in the power supply to make it work, it usually is replaced.

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

check the plug it may have a fuse also did yu hear the fan running whilst yu switched on your pc

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

no response what so ever when powering it on
i guess i'll get the power supply chceked out

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

if its the power supply replace it with the equivalent one and also its a good idea to have a surge protector connected

Re: Phatak! Now my pc won't work

that "phatak" sound most probably from ur power supply, if you open it u will find capacitors blown. change the power supply and ur pc shuld be ok, before u change it plug anyothe spare powersupply into mb to check if its demaged or not ;)
