The affected families, whose loved ones’ being treated in Punjab Institute of Cardiology, came out on roads to protest on Monday.

They demanded government to act against those factories which were responsible for manufacturing substandard medicines so other patients can be protected.

The investigation committee was probing the alleged factories and was in contact with the affected families.

The committee further said that indicated medicines must also be tried on animals so the truth can be revealed.

Moreover, some of the alleged medicines had been sent outside the country for further investigations.

Re: Pharmaceutical factory sealed after 27 die in Lahore

At least SS have balls to seal the factory, had there been a PPPP govt, then either SC had to take Suo-Motto and seal it themselves or people have to take the roads to force govt to do something about it.... in both cases, you might have posted thread saying SC and Political parties are biased and taking PPP on every issue and selective justice etc etc...

anyway, the culprits should be Secretary of Health and the regional inspector of drugs and medicine should be tried for the mass murder of 27 people!!!

Hypocricy ki intiha hai yaar, i don't support Sharif brothers but these kind of things happen in every corner of Pakistan, at least some action has been taken.

On the other hand, the whole country is going down the drain and you guys still openly support incompetent fools like Zardari, Gilani etc.

Re: Pharmaceutical factory sealed after 27 die in Lahore

not only the factory has been sealed, the owners of all three pharmaceuticals have been arrested. those who lost their lives cannot be brought back now, but the people responsible of this extremely sad episode should be tried and given maximum possible punishment under the law.

Re: Pharmaceutical factory sealed after 27 die in Lahore

Now death toll has risen to 63, and yes three owners were arrested by FIA not the government of Punjab

**Drug reaction toll jumps to 63

**LAHORE: A total of 63 heart patients have died over the past three weeks after taking medicines from government hospitals in Lahore.

The stunning fact was revealed at a press briefing by provincial Health Secretary Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) on Monday night.

The official confirmed 27 deaths in hospitals while the Principal of the Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Dr Faisal Masood, said 36 cardiac patients registered with the PIC had died of suspected drug reaction in the Services Hospital.

He said the 36 deaths were in addition to those officially confirmed by the health secretary.

Both the officials made public the ‘official figure’ after reporters accused them of concealing facts related to the deaths.

The provincial Parliamentary Secretary for health, Dr Saeed Elahi, Dengue Control Steering Committee Chairman Khawaja Salman Rafique and PIC Chief Executive Prof Mohammad Azhar were also present on the occasion.

Dr Saeed Elahi said the department would release official figures daily about affected patients from Tuesday.

He said the government’s drug testing laboratory (DTL) had sealed the factory of a local pharmaceutical company after some spurious substance was found in a medicine taken by many poor patients registered with the PIC.

The Federal Investigating Agency (FIA) sealed three pharmaceutical companies and arrested their owners on charges of supplying spurious drugs.

A large number of patients and their families assembled outside the PIC to protest over the deaths.

Opposition assails Punjab govt over drug reaction deaths

LAHORE: Opposition in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday showed their resentment over deaths allegedly caused by the reaction of drugs prescribed by the Punjab Institute of Cardiology, DawnNews reported.

Speaking during the Punjab Assembly session, Pakistan Peoples Party’s deputy parliamentary leader Shaukat Basra brought up the question of finding responsibility for the deaths.

The PPP leader wondered that although Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also held the portfolio of health ministry, he was not present in the assembly to address the issue.

Pakistan Muslim League – Quaid’s member of provincial assembly, Samina Khawar Hayat demanded the chief minister’s resignation. In addition, she demanded the registration of a criminal case against him.

Members of opposition and treasury benches started chanting slogans against each other after Hayat’s demands.
