Pestonjee : Watch Parsi life of Mumbai

Pestonjee

Summary:
The Mumbai based Parsi community (a religious sect who orginally migrated from Iran) in India are a fascinating set of people who live by their own set of regulations which are a unique blend of East and the West. Famous Marathi theater director Vijaya Mehta’s “Pestonjee” is one of the few films that explores Mumbai Parsi life.

Piroj (Naseeruddin Shah “Monsoon Wedding”) and Pestonjee (Anupam Kher “Bend It Like Beckham”) are friends in spite of being different in temperament. Piroj, an accountant, is reserved while Pestonjee, a gentleman of private but reducing means, is an extrovert. Jeroo (Shabana Azmi “Fire”), a woman of marriageable age is seen by both Piroj and Pestonjee on separate occassions. While Piroj is unsure, Pestonjee makes up his mind on the spot and marries her, unaware that his friend has also seen Jeroo. Piroj is hurt, their friendship remains in tact. Piroj is transferred out of town but keeps in touch. On a brief visit to Bombay, he is devastated to discover that the marriage is in tatters.

This gentle, wry and humorous look at Parsi life was well received at the film festivals in Singapore, Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Hawaii.
