Can guppies here who have visited Peshawar tell me what life is like there?
Can you guys post your own pictures, as well, of your visits to Peshawar. Things like landmarks, and cultural scenes are welcome.
I get the impression that women don’t walk around on the streets, and its more like Quetta in that its totally male dominated? Is this true?
How modernized is the city relative to other Pakistani cities?
Re: Peshawar
The city is quite good, women can be found on road a bit more often in Peshawar than in Quetta.
There is no male domination in Peshawar or even in Quetta or any other area of Pakistan. It is just that women in some parts feel more relaxed and happy at home than they might feel when they are on the roads.
Peshawar has got good collection of restaurants, tradtational and new markets including state-of-the-art Plazas and Shopping malls.
Pics can be found easily on the net.
Re: Peshawar
PCG I have posted some stuff about Peshawar in an another post. You might want to take a look.

There were some picture on Urban Pakistan website, but the site was hacked and still under repair. Check this out when you have time:

Women can walk the street without any problem. Dress code for women should be preferably Pakistani. Covering of head and face is not necessary though.
I must include that the atmosphere in Peshawar changed a lot after the Afghan war. Lots of Afghanis migrated to Pakistan and the more affluent ones got settled in Peshawar. They still hold a major portion of the city’s business. The more affluent Afghanis are quiet liberal. That has slowly transformed Peshawar as well.
A (claimed) state-of-the-art shopping mail is near completion in the city, dubbed as the biggest shopping mall in Asia. I doubt that but it is quiet big. We have plenty of other malls as well. People of other parts of the country come in numbers to buy stuff from markets in Peshawar. There are big cloth markets in the city which have quality cloth of different origin much cheaper than what is available in other parts of the country.
Compared to rest of the country, women get more respect. People will leave their seats in the buses for women and old people. Being a women, one can do work lot more faster than males, e.g., if you are going to pay your utility bill you do not need to stay in que to pay the bill. You can directly go to the front of the line and people will make space for you.
I am away from home for the moment but when I shall get back home I should be able to post a few pictures of the city.
Re: Peshawar
As far as modernization is concerned, it still lags behind the other major cities of Pakistan. The industrial infrastructure is in its infancy. Decade back, the governments decision to make Hattar (about 150 KM from Peshawar) a Tax Free industrial zone hit Peshawar Industries a bit too hard. People of Peshawar are not much into Industries anyways. They prefer to do business. Lot of work and effort required on this side.
Human Developement is much better compared to rural N-W.F.P., however I would say not the best in N-W.F.P. Thats will go to Abbotabad. But still it is improving. (On a world wide scale, it is pretty bad :( ). Electricity, Water, Gas, Telephone, Sewerage systems are in better shape compared to rest of the country. Dial-up Internet is cheap and abundant. Broad-band is expensive and rare. The number of people on IRC channels of Peshawar are massive, sometimes more than that in Karachi channels. Roads are generally in good shape. Some parts of the city are clean, others are not.
Organizations are generally not very open to hiring females. The main concern is that they leave work after they get married. However, that trend is changing and a lot of young women are pursuing professional education and subsequent careers. My guess would be that in the professional colleges the male/female ratio is not less than 60/40. However, there are some subjects women don't like to study. Some other subjects are totally women dominated.
Education of children (for both girls and boys) is the main subject of focus for all the parents. There are plenty of schools and colleges , some good, some not so good and, off course, some outright bad. There are three major universities in Peshawar. The agricultral university, I have heard, is pretty well equipped by the Americans and has a very decent faculty. Engineering university is nowadays very well equipped as well, because of the aid of the Japanese.
There is so much more I can write about. Do ask if you have something very specific in mind.
Re: Peshawar
Witchdr, thanks for the information. It was great to read. Its very sad that nearly the whole world have a bad image of Peshawer. I haven`t visited the city, but I will surely visit it some day.
Re: Peshawar
Ajnabee1, you are most welcome. I know what you are saying. I hear a lot from other people as well. One of the frequent question is, "So did you use to hear the explosions of the rockets and missiles in the city" and "How is the situation now? Has it calmed down in your city?". Well! The truth is there never was any unrest in the city and we are two far away from the killing fields.
Re: Peshawar
THIS time when I go there... I will Take Shots to POST here.... :Pagri:
