A Korean company will start work on Lawari Tunnel in October 2005. This is a big news for the people of Chitral and adjoining Dir. Tourism and trade will boom. I have heard that the connection road between Gilgit and Chitral is being black-topped and it is used for transportation.
For trade and tourism, this route is better than Karakuram Highway because it will be all-weather and pass through smooth terrain.
The main objective of Lawari tunnel is strategic not for the betterment of the people, off course people will also be benefited. This route will be used to connect to China for military purpose because Karakurram highway is under constant surveillance from India. Furthermore, the roads that are suppose to be built in NWFP are not motorways.
Nothing in Pakistan happens unless its strategic and economically beneficial... Not even in Punjab. How many areas in Punjab lack infrastructure despite being in Punjab?
