Peru's first female P.M. begins new role

A first for Peru, but how many countries have had women leaders?

Well the big four nations of South Asia have had female leaders at one time or another.

Peru’s First Female P.m. Begins New Role

Peru’s first female prime minister debuted Monday, pledging to bring discipline and austerity to the beleaguered government amid hopes her appointment will help salvage Alejandro Toledo’s presidency. Beatriz Merino, a 55-year-old lawyer who had been running Peru’s tax agency, was sworn in Saturday as the head of the nation’s 16-minister Cabinet. It is the most powerful political position ever held by a woman in this Andean nation. “I firmly believe that this post honors the women of our country — ignored for centuries but today integrated in the nation’s destiny,” Merino said during a ceremony at which she took over from outgoing Prime Minister Luis Solari.

ooh nice thread

And it brings some good news as well - more power to her. Hopefully she won’t become just another symbolic image of a female head of state but rather incorporate some genuine positive changes in the country.

Speaking of female heads of state, as you already mentioned, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have all had female prime ministers - as have the UK, Israel, Argentina, Malta, Haiti (interim President), Turkey, Guyana, Panama – and let’s not forget Canada on this day as well :o

Nice to see a very interesting thread with a fresh topic. :k:

How has teh tenure of women leaders been for women in teh countries that they ran? I dot know for a fact but hve heard the Benazir while in power did not eeally do much for women's causes. Is that true?
